Need a charge? Get in line
« on: November 13, 2015, 02:45:00 AM »

That is the title of a half-page-long article in my local Bay Area newspaper that starts on the first page. (The newspaper is focused on the Silicon Valley area and Santa Jose.) Under that headline it says: "Governments, businesses scrambling amid surge in demand for stations".

The article starts off by discussing IC vehicles parking in charging parking spots and EV owners who plug their cars in and take off all day, hogging the station so others can not use it after their cars are fully charged.

California has a state goal of 1.5 million "zero emission vehicles" in operation by 2025, although there they have no real plan how to make people buy them.

Recently the State PUC rejected a proposal by Pacific Gas and Electric Company to build 25,000 charging stations in Northern California and charge the cost to each residential home that they serve.  PG&E has scaled back their proposal with a plan to build up to 7,500 charging stations over the next three years.

About 160,000 electric vehicles (nothing was mentioned how many of those were motorcycles) are currently registered in CA, which has 6,000 public charging stations according to the Utility and needs about 100,000 charging stations to meet future demand.

Google estimates that it averages over 1,000 charging sessions per day. Some companies are now charging a fee for their employees to use their company charging stations, which used to be free.

The article includes the following annual new California Electric Vehicle Registrations:

2011 - 5,302
2012 - 5,990
2013 - 21,912
2014 - 29,536
2015 (through June 30) - 16,930
