Sucks indeed!  Did you order your DSR before Christmas then?  I heard they had sold the 2015 SR demonstrator.  That didn't stick around for long!  They'll be doing well to get a DSR shipped and registered by this weekend unless the whole process started weeks ago(?)

I haven't ordered anything yet. Still testing. Yes, the old SR wasn't supposed to be for sale til later this week but it sold over Xmas.

They've already got the new bike and are planning to run it on trade plates so that whoever ends up buying it is owner #1 and can get the subsidy.

Ahh, I see!  That all makes sense now.  All being well you'll have a fun weekend ahead, or however long you've got the bike for.  Good plan on keeping it eligible for the subsidy too!  I really hope there is some news on that soon for everyone's sake!

On that subject,I've had something back from my Mp's office today

Dear Mr Wilkinson,

Thank you for this further information.

I have been looking into this and cannot find any updated information from the department. I think the best thing to do, therefore, is for Stephen to write direct to the minister and ask. Would you be happy for him to do so?

Best wishes,

Emma

Well, I have the DSR this weekend.  This morning's ride in was f-squared cold but the bike was great. Eco mode was perfect for the icy roads, though the 70mph limit was irritating on the dual carriageway section. Got to work (37 miles) with 45% battery left. Would have liked the see more but, considering the temperature,  I'm fairly happy. Nice bike. May just prefer it to the SR........

Thanks for the update Steve.  What portion of your ride is at high speeds?  If most of it is on dual carriageway or fast A roads, then I'd say you've done pretty well considering it was probably only 2-3C this morning.

I test rode a 2012 DS about 18 months ago and rather liked it.  It'll be interesting to see which one you finally decide on.  Are considering a normal DS or S too?  The DSR in Eco mode should be roughly equivalent to a DS in Sport mode, I've been told.  I'd definitely go for the SR or DSR if you can afford it though!   :)

I'm looking forward to hearing more of your progress over the weekend.

To be honest I haven't noticed any difference in my battery usage with low temperatures.

I feel like I'm hijacking this thread a bit. Should I start a new one somewhere? I don't want to upset you guys.

Just on the temp vs range thing - that's obviously really good for owners. For the purposes of my test, it's not so great. I was hoping that the range was more of an issue because of the temperatures at the moment. I'm not a fair weather rider but I wouldn't normally ride on icy roads, so was hoping to see an increased range under the conditions in which I'd normally ride. Seems that wouldn't be the case   :-\

My ride involves about 8-10 miles of dual carriageway. The rest is A and B roads, quite a bit of which you can comfortably do 70 on. So potentially, 20 miles of my journey are at that sort of pace. The total journey is 35 miles each way.

When I rode in yesterday (when it was icy) I left it in Eco mode and had 45% battery remaining when I got to work.
Last night, in Custom mode with everything set to max, I had 33-35% when I got home. I had ridden it quite hard.
This morning, in Custom mode with the Closed Throttle Regen set to 0 (something I've read from owners as achieving the best efficiency) I had 37% battery remaining when I arrived at work. I had taken it fairly easy but not too ginger.

This evening I may pop it in Sport mode to see what the difference is. And tomorrow I may take a different route which cuts out all the dual carriageway.

As things stand, it's very very touch and go as to whether it's the right move. I really need to use less than half battery getting in to work, without having to ride like a complete pansy in case, for example, I get a call from home and have to make tracks back before it's had any real charge time. Makes me think that maybe an SR (cos it has *slightly* more range) with a power tank are the way to go. But that's an extra £2100 so would mean I'd have to try to get a 2015 model for the lower price. There's just no way I can justify £15,500 on this bike.

Quick update - did the alternative route (far less dual carriageway) and had 50% left when I got home. Pretty windy and torrential rain. Will try again in the morning on Eco mode.

I think the story of your DSR testing is worthy of its own topic Steve. Partly because it would give others an opportunity to follow it when perhaps they might miss it here. I wouldn't worry about it though, just a tip for another time perhaps. I'm sure most people will read it anyway. [emoji4]

Your findings are very interesting. My feeling is this:

If you think you prefer the riding style of the DSR to the SR, then go for the DSR. I wouldn't worry about the range as long as you can guarantee a charge at work. My reasoning for that is from my experience of commuting to work one way or another for approximately 15 years or so. I have never got to work and had to turn around and go straight back home due to any kind of emergency. Maybe I've been lucky.  There have been plenty of times I've had to go home early, leave at lunchtime or whatever.  For whatever reason, if I've been able to get to work on any day, I've always spent at least half a day there. It certainly isn't worth going in for any less than that with the distance of your commute.

If the DSR has a nominal capacity of around 12kWh, then the absolute worst case is that you use 75% of a full charge one-way. Let's say you were hammering it into a headwind.  That's 9kWh, with 3 remaining. To get home, you need a minimum of a 3kWh of charging to get you back to 50%. That's two and a half hours using the on-board charger. Half a day will give you about 4kWh and brings your state of charge close to 60%.  If you start work at 9:30, you need to be there until 12pm, worst case.

Your experience might be different, but it's worth trying to remember if you've ever gone home without spending at least that kind of time at work.

Finally, for the kind of emergency that makes you leave immediately and in a hurry, you probably won't want to spend the time putting your gear on. I've no doubt someone would give you their car keys or drive you home.

Does that help or do you think it would still bother you? We're onto the old chestnut of range anxiety again! [emoji6]
