2016 Power Tank Still Using 24.5 Ah Cells
« on: October 30, 2015, 08:51:46 AM »

Why?!?!

Because economics say so....but the engineers want to use the 28Ah Cells in the Power Tank (they would want more if they could get more)....and the rider who wants to go a few more miles wants the 28Ah Cells (again more if..yada yada yada)...

If i did my math right it would give you an additional 5 city miles taking the 2016 bikes with the big batteries up to about 202 city miles.  Would be cool to break the 200 mile mark.  They probably could have upgraded the cells to the bigger ones, but they got to get ride of all of the old cells first.  I would suspect the new cells will make their debut in the 2017 or a mid yeaar 2016 power tank, i doubt their would be any additional cost.

Not sure why the economics say so. They're using the 28 Ah cells in the FX bricks, and the thing costs $2800. I wonder if they're just clearing old stock

I could go into a lot of detail behind my logic but I think it suffices to say that using the 24.5Ah cells in the power tank instead of 28Ah cells because you are trying to clear out inventory IS the economics of the decision...the Ol' supply and demand.

They still sell ZF2.8 packs for the 2013-2015 FX so they could choose to use existing stock for the older model FX and stick to 28Ah cells for the power tank to match the 28Ah cells in the main pack on the S/SR/DS/DSR.  When you are putting more expensive batteries in the main pack which is sold with the bike the cost of the batteries is amortized across the entire purchase price of the bike so you can maintain higher margin.  When you just sell the pack/power tank your margin is going to be much lower.

The pure engineering decision would be to use 28Ah cells in the power tank.  There is no engineering argument to be made for sticking with 24.5Ah cells.

They would also be dangerously close to (if not over) 100 miles at 70mph.  Seems like the marketing of 100/200 would have been enough to convince the bean counters to let engineering use the 28Ah cells.
