Yamaha PES2 Electric Concept Bike
« on: October 19, 2015, 08:04:37 AM »

Another new electric concept bike from Yamaha.  Looks pretty cool but I doubt a production bike would look like this.  I hope the 2-wheel drive survives to the production bike but it seems unlikely.  I would love to see what its like to ride an all wheel drive motorcycle.  I also like the way they have integrated the headlight and the windscreen...looks pretty cool.  I hope Yamaha fulfills the promise of an electric bike in 2016....the more options for electric motorcycles the better!  I can't wait to see pictures of the real thing at the Tokyo Motor Show!

The PES2 has a large, square digital readout like the HD Livewire. I'm surprised they would have that on a design study.

Overall, much better than the original two.

Nice! I feel like Yamaha has been digging around in my brain. I've been thinking a lot lately about the Skully AR-1, Android Auto/Apply Car Play, driver assist modes like back up cameras and blind spot warning and wondering when someone will put it all together on a motorcycle.

If they made this bike and they were able to keep the essence of the look, keep the future tech bits and hit performance numbers close to what the Zero SR hits but add some way to "carry a useful load"... I'd be in. They could start by using that empty space where the tank would be on an ICE bike for storage and make it possible to put some side and top cases on it without some ugly rack hanging on it when the cases are removed.

Here is another article regarding the Yamaha concept electric motorcycles. Lots of neat styling and innovative ideas, not much performance though:

I sure hope the answer to this question is they have big things in store for us...

"Oddly, almost all the development in this high-tech market has been from small, boutique manufacturers. Surely the big names are not ignoring this emerging market, but the hesitance of seemingly all major manufacturers to jump into it begs the question – what exactly are they waiting for? Are they holding off because they just don’t see the potential in the mass production of electric motorcycles yet - or do they have big stuff in store for us?"

Hmmmm two wheel drive just like I talked about on the 2016 Zero post with the Ronin 47 picture. But people thought my idea was too weird to work.  Vindication tastes sweet.  Not as sweet as million dollar patents but sweet.

Two wheel drive motorcycles have been around for a long time.  Aside from the Ronin...which is essentially a one off...on Jay Leno's garage he says they have sold like 20....I think two wheel motorcycles have been limited to off road machines.  I think two wheel drive has benefits for a street or track bike but with ICE bikes the extra complexity and weight of front wheel drive offsets any benefits.  It's just a whole lot easier to implement with electric bikes and if it really does pay off then this won't be the last with a hub motor up front.

More torque spread out over the grip of two tires not just one should be able to pull off faster and smoother with no wasted burn out.  I used the Ronin for the fork it had.  I wanted to mount the motor on the front of the bike for cooling in the air stream.  And yes I saw the 2 wheel drive sort of mini bike ads in the back of magazines for years and Tesla just went to 1 motor per axal so not a new idea.  Just a good one.

Agreed.  In addition, when leaning in a turn, application of throttle should pull the front wheel around the turn making tighter turns at higher speeds possible.  The bike should do better at tracking to where the front wheel is pointed.

The only question is if you can get a hub motor small enough to keep the unsprung weight low enough while still providing enough power up front to be useful.

Here is another article regarding the Yamaha concept models, including photos and two short videos.  The dirt bike model video will calm you down.   ;)

So, I was bored the other day and decided to admire the design of the PES2  and while looking at the pictures i noticed this one .

It's pretty clear that they did not use a hub motor but an electric driven shaft from in the steering neck. Refer to the promotion video that Yamaha released. There is a shot at 1:04 that highlights the drive train. I didn't see that anyone pointed that out so I figured I would. Sorry if it was redundant.
