2012 to 2013 motor upgrade info
« on: October 19, 2015, 02:17:52 AM »

I've started this post to put together a list of items getting ready to start working on my winter project remotoring my 2012 DS with the new style Zero motors.

Old motor

New motor ZF 75-7 or ZF 75-5

Few points I have already learn:

-Shaft are on the wrong side or turn wrong direction. Fix rev sin/cos.
-motor mount different. Fix make adapter mount.
-Secon 4 supports this but will require setup for ZF 75- motor.

Few Question;

Motor cost?
Do i use the 75-5 or the 75-7 motor?

Any help appreciated

Thanks Jerry

Have you spoken to your dealer? They should be able to provide a kit or parts for your dealer to do this.

I'm interested in this option. My 2012 DS has 10,000 km on it now and it has just started growling and motor cutting as of lately. No fault code it just cuts. I have warranty till July 2016. I was going to go in and try to work deal with the dealer for a difference in price for the ZF 75 motor. Is zero supporting upgrading older motors now with new motors? Sorry for my ignorance been away from the forum for a little while.

Thanks Jerry

I know a guy with a 2012 DS who got his grey factory motor replaced with one of the new style gold motors like those on the 2013+ models. He said it is same as 2013+ motors, except made to run at 74 volts instead of 100 volts.

His bike was out of warranty when they did the work so he had to pay. I don't know what he was charged.

He said the new motor is louder than the old one.

I'm still under warranty so Zero would be on the hook for the motor replacment. I'm ok with some of the additional cost just want the better motor at cost that is fair. I plan to keep this bike for long while and don't to keep changing it every 10000 km if there is a better option.

I've had 5 of the various motorcycle 2011 XU, 2012 UX, 2011 DS, 2012 DS, and 2013 FX

If anyone else has had experience with this change please chime in here.

Thanks in advance.

I'm a little late to the party here, but I just bought a 2012 S from the factory.  it was a demo bike that never sold, so by the time I got to look at it the battery was dead so the dealer took it back to the factory and had the battery/motor replaced.  They replaced the motor with the newer version.  I never got to ride it with the older motor, but the new motor is quite powerful.  if you're still under warranty, call them up...they've been VERY good about honoring their warranties and going above and beyond (I've seen it a couple times).  If for whatever reason that doesn't work, PM me and I'll send you pictures of what my setup looks like.  they definitely added an 'aftermarket' mount.

Some of the faulty old motors have been replaced with new under warranty, and even some out of warranty. Zero is trying to get rid of the older bikes and motors.(trying to go right thing for customers and get ride of a headache for themselves. 2010-12 trade in upgrade). If you are having motor trouble talk to Zero or your dealer. There is definitely a new motor replacement kit available from Zero. Search the forums there are a few dedicated posts about this issue.
