Are Some "Error" Codes Normal?
« on: July 17, 2015, 02:09:07 AM »

I know when I turn on my SR with the kill switch off I see the error code 44 and if I turn the bike on with the kickstand down the error code 45 shows up.
But I'm also seeing 25 (Contactor Open Warning) and 49 (Contactor Open Disable) each time I turn the bike on. The bike then seems to run normally.
I just got it back from the factory today - maybe I'm being paranoid - or more likely I just didn't watch for errors each time I turned the bike on.
Do these codes display on your bikes when you power up?
Thanks

Yes, I get 44 when the kill switch is on.

I also get error codes 20, 28 and 29 which I believe are related to a battery isolation issue I haven't been able to track down yet.

What has Zero said about the isolation problems?

Haven't chased Zero actively on those errors, have just seen them in the bike's logs.

Error codes will often be minor or major. Some may just be status events. But they may all just be listed as error codes. Contactor should be open state until bike selftest and confirm it safe to close.
I dont have zero so not familiar with logs. But logs will usually log everything. Do logs show error codes clear or go OK?

I would expect some error codes to be normal. Often events will depend on other events to proceed them before they also change to OK / pass.

Kickstand down code should be considered normal for sure.

It's possible that it's 'normal' - I just never paid attention when turning my bike on. I'm only watching carefully now because I just got my bike back yesterday from Zero.

This is what it looks like when I turn on my bike:

Is this what you see when you turn your bike on?

You've got those error codes in normal operating state? 48&49 specifically? (i.e. the bike is functioning fine)

Every time I turn the bike on, the dash error display flashes the numbers 25, 48, and 49 before displaying all zeros (). Then the bike seems to run fine. I may be worried about nothing, but after the trouble I had on the 4th of July ("My Big Ride"  http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=4808.0) I'm afraid to go on a long ride while there are error codes on the display.

It would be very reassuring if it turned out that all of the Zero SRs (w/PowerTank) displayed the same codes when turned on.

If someone here on the forum with the same bike could turn their bike on, watch the error codes that pop up, and let me know that would be great!  Meanwhile I also sent an email to Zero to see what they say about it.

Thanks!

I got an email response from Zero today!

With respect to the Dash Error Codes, I believe these are normal items. We mostly look at them to see if they persist or if they are reported when they should not. If you didn't look already, you'll find their descriptions on page 6.6 of the Owner's Manual.  Here is my assessment.

25 - Contactor Open Warning - When the motorcycle starts up you should hear an audible click when the contactor closes. So the 25 should go away and the 49 persist because the contactor is now closed.

49 - Contactor Open Disable

48 - Sevcon Startup Disable - This should go away when you start riding.  Phrased differently, if the motorcycle doesn't move after putting up the kickstand and disabling the kill switch and this signal remained, then we would be investigating the operation of the Sevcon.

So I think you are all good.

Very reassuring! Now back to riding :)

My 2014 S with PT doesn't display any error codes, just a red light that goes away when the side stand has been retracted.  I think I like the red light better than a bunch of numbers.   ::)

Did you resolve these isolation issues? How?

Thanks!

Yes, I get 44 when the kill switch is on.

I also get error codes 20, 28 and 29 which I believe are related to a battery isolation issue I haven't been able to track down yet.

No, I never fixed the isolation issue. It was only a minor level and Intermittent and I didn't have the courage to pull the battery apart to attempt to resolve.
