2015 ZERO S power and torque
« on: June 04, 2015, 02:17:24 AM »

So I was using the app on my phone to monitor power and torque on my 2015 ZERO S on the way to work this morning.  I was surprised to see 91 lb. Ft of torque at full throttle and 44.8 kwatts of power (60hp) display ed right at full throttle.  I heard they "improved" the throttle response on the 2015 models.  Looks like they reprogrammed the controller to output more power?  Just wonder how this compares to what others are seeing.

My FX is the same motor and controller and I don't think mine is doing that good.  I can't say officially but I did ride a 2015 S before I bought my FX and there is no way the S could keep up with the FX from a dead stop so I am not sure how you managed that kind of torque....

S has a sds/ 757 motor whatever you want to call it. The fx motor is a fair amount smaller

I have been monitoring the torque and power for several days now on my way to and from work with the app on my phone and have observed several things.  First of all, when going right to full throttle from a stop,   the 90 or so lb.ft of torque is not available. Torque seems to "gradually"  but rapidly build from 0 to about 35mph and then peaks at around 90 lb. ft by about 40mph and stays around that level all the way up to 95mph.  The Zero S isn't super quick off the line, but it really does pull hard once full torque is available.   If I am just cruis ing around 35-40mph and go to full throttle full torque is almost instantly available.  The other thing that is apparent is that the amount of  torque available is dependent on the motor and controller temperature.  Once the motor temperature was up to about 165 degrees F I could only squeeze out about 87 lb. ft of torque and a corresponding 41.7 kW of power.  This makes sense  given the controller will at some point be limited as to the amount of current it puts a out at higher  temperatures and the windings in the motor become more  resistive to current flow as the temperature of the windings increase .  Given the FX is lighter I am sure it would accelerate from a stop faster than the S even if the motor wasn't capable of producing as much peak torque.  The FX may also produce more torque at lower speeds.   Anybody else have torque and power numbers they are seeing?

I never noticed that before with the different motor size.   ::)

Isn't the FX geared differently than the S giving it more actual wheel torque even though it will max out before the top speed of the s?

Yes. All current bikes have a 132 tooth rear sprocket. The FX has a 25 tooth front, the S/DS have a 28 tooth front and the SR has a 30 tooth front.

I stopped by my Zero dealer to pick up my licence plates yesterday and had the opportunity to test ride a 2014 FX 5.7. It was my first time  on the FX. I really liked how light and responsive it was off the line.  Of course quite a bit different seating position compared to the S.  It is obviously designed and geared for power at lower speeds.  It is great up to about 50mph, but the roll on torque and power above 40-50mph is definitely superior on the S. For me the S is definitely the better bike for type of riding I do. To each their own.   I rode to the dealership with my brother in law who was on a Suzuki Bandit 1250. He wanted to ride an   SR.  Unfortunately the dealership didn't have one there.   We had a few rolling start acceleration comparisons. I surprised him with how quickly the S would take off and get up to top speed.  After being walked away from he realised he had to down shift and really get on it to make sure he was a head of me .  Once he gets on an SR,  I think he will be sold. :)
