Charging a Zero on a road trip.
« on: May 17, 2015, 07:45:32 PM »

Inspired by Jared Serfozo's excellent video on charging his Zero FX, I made a crappy video on charging my Zero SR on a road trip using public chargers.

Aside from the obvious "make sure the dash is visible" let me know what else you would like to see in a video about charging on a road trip.  Cheers!

Thanks for sharing!

Is your on board charger involved as well? Do you have the power tank?

I'm so envious of your ElMoto 2015 road trip. Thanks for documenting it and sharing.

Yes I have the power tank and I use both Elcons and the onboard charger for 6.3kW of power.

Did you make the extended cables from the Elcons to the Anderson connector on your bike?

The Elcons came from Hollywood Electrics with a Y-adapter and cables that reach.  I just made mounting plates for the side racks.

Basically plan ahead and use Plugshare and RVParky apps.  Set RVParky to only show parks with 50 amp connections.

The go ride!

As you road trip, taking nice roads, enjoying the ride what do you see a good average distance per day? Say 200m/300km or more?

For both of the past 2 summers I averaged 312 miles (500km) per day while road tripping.  "Short" riding days were about 200-250 miles and there were two long rides this year of 475mi (765km) and 454 miles.  The farthest I went on a 2012 was 381 miles in a day.

Days when I really enjoyed the ride I went about 270-300 miles per day.  I rode from 7am until sundown sometimes due to lower speed limits and charging.

Hi Ben great setup.  I don't know why it took so long to find your videos on You Tube when I type in Zero Motorcycles in the search but I'm glad I found them better late then never.  I saw you kept your speed down to about 60MPH for most of your trips did you ever get the overheating issue that pops up with some SRs? Also does that J1772 plug feed your on board charger as well or does it have to be plugged in with the PC power cable on the side?  I wish I was a teenager and could ride the bikes ten years from now.  They will really be amazing. Oh and that Mt. Washington video through the clouds pretty awesome.

I haven't had any overheating issues with my Zero SR.  Lately it has been VERY hot in NJ and I have been doing a lot of highway riding, and the temperature warning light comes on, but the bike has continued to have full power.  Riding all day on highways at 60mph is easy-peasy.  Riding at 80mph all day when it is hot might get you a warning.

The J1772 feeds into both Elcons and the onboard charger through the normal side port.  My J1772 plug is split 3 ways.

Yes, riding up Mt. Washington was amazing and the Blue Ridge Mountains were pretty great as well!  I rode the tail of the dragon last year and am working hard to come up with reasons to return!
