Power Tank by demand
« on: April 22, 2015, 03:59:58 PM »

Since the FX is able to automatically detect a second battery pack. Why can't a SR/DS/S automatically detect if a Power Tank is installed or not? Or a 4th monolith in the case of 9.5 DS/S?
I know this can be limited by the firmware (and probably is). Why? To make sure that you pay your local shop for the installation? ;)

if (model == FX)
  auto_detect_battery_configuration();
else
  ignore_extra_batteries_until_further_notice();

 ::)

Or is it in fact possible to remove Power Tank without updating any parameters in the BMS?

Best regards,
Frode

I'm pretty sure the reason has to do with the amount of wrenching required.

Also, remember, the whole faux tank has to be replaced.

Adding a Power tank to the S/DS/SR calls for installing additional high voltage wiring. This is not built in to the non-power tank bikes.
The power tank has it's own BMS that works in conjunction with the Monolith. The MBB needs to recognize both of the BMS cards to operate properly.

Adding a 4'th module to a ZF9.5 is a major update.
The modules in the monoliths are interconnected with cabling. The three brick monolith does not have the cabling to support a 4'th module.
The factory could open and rebuild a 3 brick module into a 4 brick module but it is labor intensive. And requires additional parts (that are not available to dealers or customers).

Thank you for explaining this!

I was planning on buying the S 9.5, so I was trying to convince myself that a battery upgrade would be possible (and easy) :)
However, an SR is on its way to me now :D

It is going to be two long weeks of waiting. The nice weather here in Norway is not helping ;)

Do you get the tax incentives for electric motorcycles, too, In Norway?

Yes, that's right. No VAT, no import tax and we only pay 25% of annual motor vehicle tax. :D

That's nice. In Holland we get incentives when you own a company. I am self employed and get a 64% of the ex. VAT price as tax deductable. A business pruchase is always VAT free. That means that I have an extra tax deduction of about 10.000 euros from my income. And we don't need to pay road tax.
So the nett payment for this new bike, incl. accesoires and chargers is about 3-4000 euros compared to a non-business purchase.

That is nice. In Norway it does not matter if it is a company vehicle or not.
And I think I would have to pay roughly $4500 (US) more for a "similar" ICE bike.

I just read an article in today's newspaper written by a CA state legislator who plans to introduce a proposed law that would charge electric vehicles a flat $100 a year so that they would be paying their "fair share" toward road maintenance (since they don't pay gas taxes).  I'll bet no accommodation is provided for motorcycles in his bill.   >:(

typical lease distance depreciation rate 12000 mi/yr / 30 mpg average * $0.488 us avg tax per gallon = $195.20/yr

'sbout right.  Of course if I was in that situation I'd love to see a carveout for motorcycles, and you're right, there probably won't be.

It's also unfair because many of these EVs are second vehicles and probably do well less than 6000 mi/yr.
