MCN reviews the 2014 Zero SR

Review was posted in the September 2014 issue. Obviously not new but it's well-written and has some nice performance data.

You may also find it interesting to read the reddit thread where the tester is discussing the bike.

Their chief nitpicks? Brakes, suspension, seat, price, charge times. They were actually quite happy with the range, it's still no touring bike but has plenty of range to be useful.

What's new in 2015? Brakes, suspension, seat.

I guess price and improved onboard charging will come in time.

4.6 sec 0-60 mph instead of 3.3, that's quite a difference.

Did Zero tested 0-60 with a jockey? I'm curious about their testing method.

After I'd put down the deposit on my SR, but before it arrived, I found an online drag-racing calculator and ran some numbers on it. It would calculate 1/4-mile and 0-60 times for vehicles given their weight, torque and horsepower numbers -- it assumed the builder/driver worked out all driveability issues and knew how to drive.

IIRC, with a 150-lb rider onboard, it calculated exactly 3.3 seconds for a 407-lb vehicle with 106 ft-lbs of torque. Yeah, that's a small guy but not ridiculously so. With someone my weight on it...well, let's just say it wasn't quite that quick.

Their test rider was 240 pounds, and the SR had a power tank. That adds up to a lot of extra weight. I'm 150 pounds and my SR has no power tank so I'm fairly confident that I could get close to Zero's quoted time to 60. in fact, there is a YouTube video with someone getting 3.8 or 3.9. However, it's not from a dig that I'm impressed - it's the rolling acceleration. I need to get a Vbox to verify this, but using my rudimentary counting method I'm going from 30 to 70 somewhere in the 3 second range, certainly under 4. That is very quick by any standard.
