ChaDeMo - Where does it work?
« on: September 25, 2014, 03:20:50 AM »

Do the 2013 ChaDeMo connections work with Nissan stations?  If not, please see below.  If they do work with our bikes, please see below.

If you have charged successfully using ChaDeMo level 3 fast charging, please let me know what kind of station it was.  I may be able to help increase the number of stations that work with our bikes dramatically.  ;D  Or I'll put a bunch of work into this project and nothing will come of it.   :P

Please write the make & model of the unit & any other identifying information.
If you have a photo of the station, that would be helpful.
If you have a photo of the information sticker, that would be amazing!

Thank you!

The Nissan $15k stations should work with the Zero bikes. They go down to 50V, and can supply 125A IIRC. They're really ideal.

I don't know if they actually work though.

Ok, so what I know is that for the CHAdeMO interface on the 2013 Zeros is that they do seem to work with Eaton chargers.  I used the one at the 7-11 in Flushing and the one on I-95 at the Darien service area.  I went from 40% to 100% charge in something like 25 mins in Darien.  The one in Flushing wouldn't charge me all the way, and ultimately there was some other issue.  A word of caution to 2013 Zero CHAdeMO users, if you get a charger that gives you up to 95%, take that as a good thing and just leave, don't try for 100%.   I also tried the Aerovironment charger at Seward park in lower Manhattan, and that one would die after a few seconds.  I called Aerovironment and they acknowledged that there's an open case with them by Zero about the problem.  If my recollection serves, the Aerovironment charger treats the low-voltage request from the Zero as a fault, even though technically it SHOULD be accepted based on the CHAdeMO standard.  They've been working on this for several months as far as I am aware, but neither side was really saying much of anything about it so I do not know.  Unfortunately, it's slim pickings for CHAdeMO variety in NY metro, so I can't really say, and I don't have that particular Zero anymore so I can't do any further tests until I have CHAdeMO again on my present Zero.
