Zero S ZF11.4 2014: sudden shutdown while riding
« on: July 01, 2014, 10:34:32 PM »

The bike was with the dealer for 3 weeks. They took it apart, put it back together and did some tests together with people from Zero.
Got back the bike 2 days ago but alas same problem: bike suddenly shutdowns while riding. The dash is completely blank so unfortunately the system warning indicator is useless.
Right after that I can see bms led #4 blinking to say the battery is healthy.
A day after, after the bike is delivered back to the dealer by the tow truck, everything works again like nothing happened.
Anybody else having the same sort of problem?
What could be the cause?

Well, that sucks.  Unfortunately, I don't have a clue.  Nor have I heard of this problem on a 2014 model.   ???

I say you have a bad connection, there was another post about a bent pin in a connector on a BMS board.
You could have similar, will be very intermittant, and hard to find, if they tested all componets most likly wiring harness faulty connector

My bike had a bent pin on one of the connectors.  It required a visual inspection of each connector to locate.

Richard230, yes I saw your post during the weeks my bike was at the dealer and passed the info to him. He assured me they verified all connectors.

I'm getting a bad feeling about this apparently isolated incident. Especially since they were not able to reproduce the problem during their tests. I can only hope they succeed this time.  :-\

All connectors are crimped pins, maybe a bad crimp or pinched wire being shorted.

They're going to replace the bms board. Bike should be back with us in a week or so.
Hopefully that will be the final solution.

In the meantime the dealer lets us use a replacement Zero DS. :-)

Wow! Too bad the dealers are not always doing it like that, 2 people in this forum had really bad dealer service. How can they have so much service quality difference?

Thats the problem with dealers, they can vary massively between each other in regards to service.

The local dealer support from the manufactrurer will influence this, my experience of Zero UK prior to them leaving was really quite good, for example.
Again a lot of people have made an important point regarding this, in that for the most part the dealerships are not familiar with the tech, most of the dealers mechanics will be used to dealing with ICE bike, and know how to fault find and fix common ICE problems. They, for the most part, face a real steep learning curve with the electric power trains. That unfamiliraty is going to show for a good while.

What the world needs are a lot more dealers with "Hollywood Electrics" experience all over the place, but I expect that will be a while comming yet.
