Zero SR - options to remove/replace fender
« on: June 08, 2014, 05:09:49 AM »

Recently bought an SR and really enjoying its awesome torque.

The bike looks great except for the glorified number plate holder (fender). Has anyone had any success in removing and replacing it with something simple. Happy to change to an integrated light and indicator set up but would be just as happy to have a simple plate holder with plate light with existing indicators attached and the existing tail light.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

There are several on the market. I have one on order from R&G but they are out of stock.

Managed to find the R&G holder on ebay. Looks like a perfect fit for the SR as well as the S and DS so I've ordered one.

There's more than 10 in stock if others are interested.

There are cheaper ones but I wanted to make sure I had a license plate light and the dealer threw it in. Guess I wait for a free one.

I went with one of the $20 units.
Fits great and the only trouble I had installing it was to unscrew over tightened bolts (dealership messed up).
Here's what it looks like with LED light bolts.

The best plate holder I've ever had was a fender eliminator kit for a Honda 600RR. It was hinged and spring loaded and was built in stainless steel. I wish there was something like that for the Zero.

Looks great, GNU. Can't wait to get mine and be done with my mods. I see you also have the carbon fiber seat cowl. I took off the passenger pegs to complete the clean look.

Nice!

"clean"  ;D

I'm still waiting for my new set of body panels. Plan to wrap them in dull/matt white.

Nice, GNU, can't wait for those pics. When I ordered my S a few months ago, I had my dealer inquire about putting the white panels from the police package on it, but they refused so I settled for black. I think this bike would look fantastic in matte white!

Fitted the R&G Tail Tidy to my SR last night.

Looks very neat and everything fitted perfectly with no modifications. I'd highly recommend this upgrade. It is a little pricey but the parts are excellent quality!

I wish Zero hadn't tightened some of the fender bolts so much - stripped all the 4mm allen key soft alloy bolts getting the old licence plate holder off!

To make the rear end even cleaner, I've also removed the passenger pegs but now need to attach the rear brake fluid reservoir to the frame.

Now to switch to some Diablo Rosso II tyres so I can head out in the rain with more confidence and take it out for some track days!

Enjoy!

Removing the pegs:

Left passenger peg - very easy, just the two fastening bolts which are quite accessible.

Right passenger peg - a little trickier as there's not enough space between the motor to fit a socket wrench. A crescent wrench did the trick - the right size wrench/spanner would have been fine too. The brake fluid reservoir attaches to a separate location on the right passenger peg so I'll need to re-attach it with a bracket to the frame where the top fastening bolt for the passenger peg attached previously.

The pegs weigh about a pound each if you're interested in a lighter bike.

Will look to post some photos from the back in daylight.
