I agree that higher power, light weight, compact on board chargers would/could arguably be a big leap forward for range without blowing the cost. Battery capacity can creep up with tech improvements and price declines, Being involved in PV, one thing I can tell you is our industry is starting to slowly move away from high voltage DC, despite the efficiencies. The reason is safety - HV DC can arc long distances and causes very fast very hot fires.

Because I'm PV obsessed, I would vote for the high power charger to be b-directional. It would add very little additional cost (if any) and allow the bike to serve as a home storage system really economically, avoiding the need for additional stuff in the home. This instantly creates a whole new appeal to the growing market of millions of home solar owners because they can smear the cost of bike ownership and storage cost across two devices.

I think ABS is as good as confirmed :

I wonder if I'm going to be able to get that upgrade on my 2013 S.

Hi guys,

Below is a link to a new battery technology that I think will change the game once and for all and put a grin on everyones face.

Big promises. Needs some third party validation - and even that as we saw with Envia doesn't guarantee the technology will make it to production and be cost-effective.

Don't expect to see this in our 2015 bikes.

20x faster charging than Li-ion - A 10 Kwh battery is 100% charged in 5 minutes
Energy density comparable to state of the art Li-ion
Long lifetime of 3,000 charge/discharge cycles (Li-ion's life is closer to 1,000 cycles)
Ability to discharge fully without the risk of short-circuiting and damaging the battery
Doesn't heat up, so it wouldn't require extensive cooling
More powerful than other batteries, operating at over four volts

Manufacturing costs that are equal to or lower than Li-ion
Very safe, reliable, and environmentally sustainable
Fully recyclable

it is another revolution coming up

There is a story a day about new battery technologies.

Stories are easy to write, mass market products take longer.

I am sure that we will all have access to better batteries "soon", just not sure how soon.

It is not likely that the 2015 models will have a new groundbreaking battery technology.

My basic rule of thumb,
Until its in a bike/car that can be bought by the public then it does'nt exist. :)

Hey guys, I don't know of a better thread to ask a question about Z-Force motors. Do I stand a chance of sourcing some Zero motors or the whole drive train for a project of my own? I live in Eastern Europe. Any ideas? I know they are produced in China by Motenergy.

I bought the 2013 Zero FX/MX drive train for converting my hombuilt trike from gas to electric but that was when Zero first started selling the "Zero Powertrain". Shortly after that they decided to not sell to individuals anymore, only to OEM customers.  :'(

I think the company lawyers got concerned about the guys who were building electric ultralight aircraft and electric self launching sailplanes.

BTW - If you are newer here, I posted the progress of that e-trike project on this forum.

I have seen your video, electric is the best way to freely explore the World. As I hate to leave behind trails of emission and sound, and even a trail on the ground. I have also seen the video of the guy who used the Zero drivetrain on his ultralight. Amazing prospects, really.

I thought the ultralight guy was a Zero employee. Maybe I'm wrong?

The guy says Dale Kramer discovered the motor for them. A very tempting motor for aviation use, as it is air cooled. Although a bit heavy with 13,6kg (40Kw) and could have a smaller diameter (from the looks). By the way what exactly are the diameters for the different models? And are there 2 or three models of it. Like 33Kw, 40Kw and 50Kw ?
