Motorcycle thefts and how to steal a bike
« on: February 04, 2014, 09:51:17 PM »

Here is a blog from motorbiker.org regarding motorcycle thefts in Europe (I am pretty sure that the brands are much different in the U.S.), which includes an interesting video showing how a motorcycle can be stolen, and its three different locks defeated, within about three minutes.  Not a nice thing to look at.   >:(

Ouch... I thought the key lock had a better design. Too bad Zero do not have an electronic security built in (it seems that without any hardware addition they could have a mode preventing the bike from running running without a bluetooth pairing with your phone).

That's more or less the whole reason for the article I wrote. Car companies are doing a lot now for security, but bikes companies are leaving it to the strict minimum. The only company I know off who do more or less what you said is BMW/Mini with their electric scooter. The key to the scoot is your smartphone. If you don't have a paired smartphone, you can use it (not only will it not start, but all your instruments are on the phone).

Well, I guess I won't be buying a BMW e-scooter any time soon.  I don't own a "smart phone" and if I did, I probably couldn't figure out how to use it.   ::)

It wasn't the BMW eScooter but the Mini eScooter, the car Mini that is, which belongs to BMW . The Beemer scooter to my knowledge is "normal".

I guess Mini assume anyone who is technology enabled enough to want to buy an eScooter will have a smartphone.... ;)

I have to disappoint you I am a soft and hard-ware developer and I don't use a smartphone - I don't have the personal need and my old Nokia has a real GPS that runs ~ 6-7h on battery ;)

I have to add I got an old Samsung from a workmate - I will try to update Android 4.X so I can try the Zero app.
But it is for fun and I wont run it as a telephone!

Bluetooth as a protocol hasn't proven to be very secure at all.  I would rather have a key.

Even the fingerprint scanner on the new iPhone was cracked by an amateur with hours of its release.

The difference between the Mini setup and Bluetooth-type security is that the Mini doesn't use Bluetooth but uses the iPhone socket of the e-scooter. So it's not wireless, but hard wired.

I've seen a few more of these setups, and it's interesting.

A thread that I read long ago:  http://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/t5shp/ex_thief_chopshop_operator_ama/

Say what you will about the man who wrote it, there is some good information in there about protecting your motorcycle.
