The Power Tank technology looks pretty interesting. An upgrade down the road for people who desire more range.

Adds an extra 2.8 kWh of power.

Brilliant idea.

Use the pieces that you have to make new options that make sense and in doing so those pieces get better and better.

It is definitely brilliant. But the charger situation (no increase in onboard charging) means that CHAdeMO stands out even more for any travel option. So, Power Tank plus CHAdeMO means 12.5kwh (they list 171 non-highway miles, 88 highway miles) and one hour recharge time.

It is not listed as compatible with the 2013 models on the accessory page. I'm guessing that the tank area had to be redesigned a bit to accommodate both the shape and the additional power input, but it does seem like an enterprising customer could adapt it to the 2013 model.

Are there better pictures of the tank pack? It's a great idea! Same base, but you can add more energy. I was thinking of how I could add side cases to my Brammo for longer trips.

Price with the power tank is in-line with that of a high end Brammo. I would like to see the Chademo come standard on their bikes or at least J1772.

Under the frame listing on the features page, there is this bullet point: "Integrated Power Tank frame structure stiffens the frame". So, the frame (and suspension, I expect!) upgrades are directly linked to the power tank capability.

Excellent point! Maybe the waterproofing would be desirable for that, though. I have certainly had items get damp in the tank bag.

Weight looks rather high and rearward for performance riding but great to see numbers like that which should add a lot of potential buyers!

Even at 447 pounds the big Zero S will still weigh less than any of my other motorcycles - other than my 2012 S, of course.  As long as I don't have to push it, I don't mind a little extra "road hugging" weight.   ;)

 That is too heavy for me. I think my 2013 S 8.5 is 355 lbs. making it my heaviest bike but still manageable. Another nearly hundred pounds is too much for me although I really like everything else.. the 3.3 seconds 0-60 time especially.

Personally, I like this idea.  I hope Zero starts looking into onboard faster charging options to address range issues instead of only throwing more battery at it.

I saw somewhere that the success of electric vehicles (alternative fuel vehicles) won't be so much range as the time it takes to restore range i.e. Refueling time. Which boils down to convenience.

171 miles range (albeit at low speed) is already plenty more than most gas bikes.  My KTM and my friends superdukes etc. only do 100 miles on a tank.  The range is now great, time to work on charging time.

I get 220 miles @ 55mph on my Diversion 900.
However a 2014 with the additional power pack and Chademo would be a viable touring machine to replace the Divvy.
