Hello from NZ
« on: July 27, 2013, 07:54:45 AM »

Hello all, just thought I would stop by and say G'day. Ned (Allister) Kelley here in the middle of winter in Middle Earth NZ. We do not as yet own an electric bike. Cath (long-suffering and patient partner) and I are going through the process of purchasing two Zero DS's. Fairly new to this part of the world so just getting all the red tape dealt with.
We are life long Motorcyclists currently ride a 2013 Suzuki 650 V-Strom which is a great bike for it's economy and versatility. We do around 30K Kms per year each with commuting and social riding...so the Zero...zero gas option is something we are really keen to embrace!! :)

This community and the support and collective learning available is something we value and I am sure will continue to appreciate and embrace.

So keep happy, safe and well all. Every blessing to you and your loved ones. Journey well and enjoy the adventure! :D

Hi Ned I am from Australia, Can you tell us more about your purchase of zero's, as there are no dealers for Australia & New Zealand, I assume your importing them yourselves. I think its easier to import in NZ than Australia.

Will keep you in the loop with the Bureaucracy as it unfolds Firepower! :) It is definitely easier this side than yours that is for sure! :) I am hoping someone will pick up a dealership soon though? Triumph Aus/NZ seem to like picking up all the odds and ends of motorcycling so maybe there is an in there! :) Keep safe mate.

Welcome to the club Ned.  It will be interesting to hear how your import works out.  I like to think that local authorities will bend the rules the little and fast track zero emission vehicles like the Zero, as they did over here in Jersey.

Is there much charging infrastructure in NZ?

Good luck with the buying process. In the USA, I have a convenient dealer so that played into the buying decision. I must say that as a fellow new-V-Strom owner (2012), the DS is a great complement, and I now more or less use the V-Strom only when I need to go out of town. The V-Strom now feels large and luxurious compared to the more spartan and spritely Zero. :)
I still make sure that the Zero has hard cases for grocery runs and the like, and have taken my partner for city rides. For passengers, I recommend the top case and rack, although it sounds like your partner would not put up with that and must have her own ride, which is excellent. :)

Thank you NoiseBoy :) A great club to be a part of. I will keep everyone updated with the process. Still waiting for some feedback from this side.
There is very little charging infrastructure available publicly. Wellington city has some points available on the waterfront provided by Z Energy...apart from that it is a matter of finding a power point and doing it the long way... :D
I suppose it is the old story of supply and demand? More EV's about the more demand to cash in on?
Keep happy safe and well NoiseBoy  :)

Hey Brian  :)

Thanks for the welcome, I love your ride it is the model and colour I am hoping to get over here. I will get both fitted with the bags as, like yourself I tend to us my MC for shopping, work and all the other general running about that occurs during the day ::)
Kitty works at Auckland Airport..about 100kms north up highway 1. She is excited at the prospect of zero gas bills!  :) Lots of charging points about her "office" so all is well with charging.

Ride safe brother and enjoy the journey..blessings to you and yours,

Hi Ned

I live in Sydney and have a 2010ds and ManlyT lives nearby with a 2011s. Both huge fans and willing tinkerers! I visited the Zero factory and write stories on the bike for my blog occasionally http://solarbusiness.com.au/. The 2013 is stunning. Welcome to the world of electric bikes mate.

Got a message from Zero just the other day; they are heading down under next month and seem pretty close to a deal with a big distributor. Their aim in a nutshell, is to do it properly this time; service, support, bigger sales and better tech back up. Had a good meeting with them when i visited Santa Cruz. It sounds like they are very close and IF they launch with the 2013 (well sorted) it will eb a game changer. The new one is so different to earlier models, it will sell much better.
