2013 Zero FX... Throttle doesn't respond
« on: April 24, 2013, 12:06:46 AM »

So yesterday I rode my bike, couldn't help it, had to do it (it's got the clicking issue, waiting on parts, neither Zero nor my dealer said not to ride it so I did...) on the way home after an easy ride (40mph max, on pavement) I wen't over a small indent in the pavement while lightly accelerating and the throttle quit responding.

Everything seems normal, bike turns on with no issues, head light works, everything seems perfectly normal, but if you twist the throttle nothing happens, I played with the engine cut (arm?) switch, turned the bike on and off, then I pushed it to a safe location & walked home for my truck.

I called the dealer on my walk home & they said Zero would be contacting me at some point.

So I'm hoping this is a fuse or something? I'm in the National Guard and on orders this week so I haven't had much time at home to look at the thing, I haven't even cracked open the manuel PDF that was emailed to me.

Anychance this is something easy?

Perhaps the throttle wire(s) to whatever it connects to became disconnected?

Assuming they havent changed the throttle since the one on the 2012 X,  its just a connector on the end of a lead, chances are it has come unstuck.  Follow the wire down from the throttle and see what you find.

seems very possible, I'll trace it tonight and see, Zero is in contact with, I sent them logs & they are reviewing them.

there was a slight bump involved with the throttle responce stopping, hopefully it's as simple as a loose connection :D

so pulled the bike apart and traced the throttle back to where it connects to the main harness (to the left of the front fork area), while I had the panels and seat off & was messing with the cables (disconnected & reconnected the throttle assy. etc.) it started responding again so I put everything back together and prepared for a test ride... throttle quit responding again.

I'm going to do the same thing tonight with a multi-meter and see if i can narrow it down to the throttle side or the harness side.

that little tease of forward momentum lastnight was supremely disapointing... haha

Can you see if the pins on the connector are crimped correctly? It is possible that they crimped the insulation, and not the actual wire strands.

it's a really tight connector, & it worked for 200 miles so I assume it is crimped enough that it would be hard to visually  check that. I did look at the connectors to ensure the metal contact points were all present & looked functional, I hope it's not the main harness that is the issue, I'm getting a throttle shipped to me to test that as I can't recreate the "forward movement" phenomenon from the other night.

so I got the throttle in lastnight (they fedex'd it to me really quickly!), hooked it up to test & it worked. I removed the old throttle, installed the grip (man that was a pain! Has there's gotta be some trick to that,, haha) & went for a short ride & the same thing happened, it really seems like it's happening under acceleration, the last three times it has cut out has been under acceleration or under acceleration with a bump involved.

I had the wires out a bit & plugged/ unplugged messed with the wires etc, about the 4th time doing that it worked again so I slowly rode it home.

One other thing as I rode down my long steep hill I tried to mostly use the backbreak, it used to squeal a bit & I figured it was just break in noise, now the squeal is accompanied by a loud clicking sound that gets louder as I slow down... It's louder than the missized sprocket key issue (that Florida motorsports told me a replacement was coming for but I haven't seen yet) noise which is more of a quiet clicking on deceleration regardless I breaking.

So, there it is; I don't mind driving my truck but I got this bike for its awesome commuting capabilities & possibility of weekend fun (hell I I could ride the bike just to work it would pay for itself in the saved gas!)

Hopefully they  have some magic up their sleave for me, so far they've been responsive and helpful given my out-of-dealer-range location.

I'm passing ICE bikes in my truck a little jealously now...

Got my quick charger in the mail today... now if I could find a way to drain my batteries and use it I'd actually be excited.

the Zero staff is still talking about options on my bike, possible trip down to fix it (it appears to be a harness problem) hopefully a decision is reached next week, 200 miles then almost a MONTH of down time is not what I was looking for when buying this bike.

After rolling my FX forward out of a parking space today with the key off, it took three on-off cycles before the throttle would respond :-[

strange, mine only quits while accelerating (which gives a big   :( face) its working right now but I've been stuck every time I've tried to go somewhere since it first happened so I'm pretty gun shy right now.

Rum is 8$  a bottle down here, so of course I've converted from beer to rum (for purely economical reasons) and fresh fruit juice (cause, well it just costs the electricity and a second or two at a mango / orange / passion fruit etc.. tree)

I can see why people like the Caribbean
