Luggage rack only?
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:48:46 AM »

I have a S on order and would like to have something I could attach a lunch box to, such as the Givi luggage rack that comes with the Top Box.  I don't know if $600 is a high price for this, but I am not interested in the box, just the rack.  How does the Givi accessory attach to the bike? Would it be difficult for someone to make a shelf that would attach to the same hard points that would allow me to bunji items to it?

That was my biggest complaint about my 2012 S - no luggage rack.  (Which I mentioned every time I had a chance to speak with a Zero representative, BTW.)  What I finally did was to strap an expandable RKA seat pack to the rear of my seat, extending over the rear plastic tail.  It looks to me that would work much better on the 2013 models, as their seats are longer and their tail section is flatter.  In any case, my seat pack has worked very well and I have managed to carry a lot of stuff using it.  Unfortunately bungee hook locations are few and far between on my Zero, so I replaced the bag's seat hooks (which were too long for the thin seat) and just used its nylon straps, tied under the seat and the rear tail panel.  Photo attached.

I had the same question that I asked Harlan. He had a couple of rear top boxes on order. When it comes in I'll take a look. Hopefully they can be ordered separately if the rack portion can work as a stand alone unit.

Ask your dealer to make a deal on the Givi plate without the top box.   They should be willing to do that on a new bike sale.   I had a setup similar to this on a KLR650 once and the Givi mounting plate makes a good tail rack.

I hope that idea works.  When I bought my Zero I asked my dealer if I could buy just the Zero-brand fabric top box, instead of their entire saddlebag and top box set - which was selling for too much $$$.  Unfortunately, I was told that the bags and seat pack had to be sold as a set and could not be broken up into individual sales.  So I moved on to plan "B".

Forgetting about the rear rack that I really wanted and also forgetting about installing a nice new Zero-brand seat pack. So instead I dug though my motorcycle accessory debris closet, found my old RKA seat pack and made that work instead.
