can ds2010 battery be upgraded to higher capacity one?
« on: August 29, 2011, 07:48:21 AM »

I know the batteries cost $3,000 and up. Hopefully in a few years they will be cheaper and higher capacity is what I always hear, but is there any truth to that hopefull statement?  Is battery technology really advancing that fast??

You can't even upgrade the 2010DS to the 2011DS battery, which seems strange. Zero told me the electronics are totally different between the two bikes.

Hi, I guess the initial idea at Zero was to be fully upgradeable. But try this to your computer at home .... at one stage you need to get a new one. Zero must have thought hard about it and pulled the plug to deliver newer technology all round. Having said that I am happy with the 2010 bike and the range and it seems that the heavier 2011 bike does not get more out of it. Will think about a better battery in 3 to 5 years and see what is out there and how it can be made work in the Zero...

cheers

The problem with changing the battery is the battery management system.  The BMS has to be compatible with everything else on the bike - charger, controller, dash.  I'm not saying it'll be impossible, but it'll require more work than simply swapping the battery for a different one.
