charger for single cell (headway 38120)
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:38:14 PM »

Hi,
Hope someone here can help. I'm looking for a single cell charger for headway 38120 cell,so i'm guessing to charge to 3.7v? I'm in the uk so need 3 pin plug. How long does it take to charge these cells?
many thanks

We used a variable output power supply, with digital voltage and current readouts. Took around 5hrs to charge our 10Ahr cells, and yes, 3.7V sounds about right (check the cell datasheet to be sure though). You could also check hobby RC stores etc, I think they use similar battery tech so may have single cell charges.

Get a charger from here:
http://www.batteryspace.com/smartchargerforlifepo4batterypacks.aspx

headways should be charged to 3.65V, don't go above that. Don't go above 10A.

The amount of time it takes to charge depends on the charger. Its a 10Ah cell, and can take 1C charging (10A). If you charge at 10A, it'l take one hour. If you charge at 1/2C (5A) It'l take ~2hours. Bogan must've been charging at 2A or so. Its better for the battery, but it takes 5 times longer.

I got an Onyx 230 from my LHS and it charges single cells of lipo, lifepo4, nicad, nimh, etc. Its about $80, but its a pretty versatile charger. If you just want something simple, get this:
