It is official. Toyota' President and CEO made the announcement at Tesla's HQ at 5 pm today. Tesla will be building their Model S sedan in a portion of the remodeled factory located in Fremont, CA, which is owned by Toyota. Toyota will be buying $50 million of Tesla's stock when the company goes public. The car is expected to start rolling off the assembly line at the former NUMMI factory in 2012. The original factory employed (and laid off last month) 4,500 employees. It is expected that about 1000 employees will be hired to build the Model S. The mayor of Downy, CA, says that they were "stabbed in the back", as they had been negotiating with Tesla for the past year and had a lease agreement ready to be approved by their city council tomorrow. The mayor said that you just can't trust a big corporation. (I assume he was thinking of Toyota and not Tesla.)
