I am currently traveling but I recall my DSR/X key looks like the one sold on Koups page:

https://shop.koups.com/products/zero-motorcycles-fst-key-blank-sr-sr-f-sr-s-dsr-dsr-x-27-08205

Doing a google image search, leads me to key blanks on eBay for a KTM RC8 or a Ducati Monster;

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=ktm+rc8+key+blank&_sacat=0&_nls=2&_dmd=2&rt=nc

https://www.ebay.ch/itm/403297346498

No guarantee either will work, and you still need to get the key cut by a locksmith, but considering the low price for these blanks compared to the price of the Zero key (with chip), buying one seems like a risk worth taking.

Of course, your other option is find a real locksmith and see if they have a solution.   You will probably need to find one anyway to duplicate your key to the blank.

Those blanks don't have the flared opening to the channel which could be vital.

EDIT: Actually, looking at already cut keys it appears the flared part would be cut when cutting the key. Material to one side of the channel is cut away completely.

That's what I'm after, thank you!
And yeah the locksmith's solution was to tell me to get the $87 blank from Koups

You'll want to check with them that they can actually cut that kind of key. Instead of being ground from the side like a regular key it's milled from the top.

I think keys like that are actually milled.  I'm currently in a rental Hyundai and it has a similar side milled key.   I'm sure a real locksmith shop would have a machine to handle the job.  Not just any hardware store or Home Depot type store.

Whenever I've had things like house keys cut, Yale style, they've been done on machines like a bench grinder (although of course more precise and with a duplicating mechanism). I've never actually seen any other type of machine before but from a quick search they have ones that look like mini milling machines (only £300 on Amazon, could be a cheap start to a little side business) which would do both styles of keys.

Yup, laser cut. I've found two locksmiths that can do it.

I've always wanted the same.  I've never found a great inexpensive solution.  I am probably going to go the electric route but leave the lock in place also.  Pretty sure that would work.  Then I can unlock it while riding without shutting it off (drink water at a stop light, etc), but also open it with the key when it's off.  The electric route costs maybe $15, or $25 if I go with high end parts.

The more I look the more I see these side milled keys are now very quite common among vehicles.    I noticed that my BMW R1250GS (which has keyless start) also uses a side milled key.   Below is a photo of my Zero and BMW key.   They are the same size and the BMW key does fit into the Zero's locks.   There are places that offer a BMW key blank without a chip for a very low cost.   That is probably the route I would go.
