Charging from a Commando socket (CCE 16amp CEE socket)

Hi.


I tried charging my bike on an industrial Commando socket for the first time. It was slower than usual. The app showed that the charging was stopping and starting every second or so.


Does anyone know what is happening. Will it be bad for my bike?

I'll take a stab in the dark.  Id have to actually BE there with some equipment to fully analyze but if it's starting stopping, thats a sign of shitty power coming into the bike.  If I am on just solar and at the swapover threshold for gen .vs. cons and it wants to start inverter hunting any... ..basically any blips, glitches, noise on the power line and your bike may  throttle the charge rate way down until the condition cleans up.  I have not done any research as to why exactly, it may be the CCS mis interpreting the noise as saying,  ok reduce my max available amps to zero or 1, so it complies.. not sure but I DO notice this exact thing happening when the power coming in is dirty or unstable.

Is there GFI anywhere on this circuit?  That can cause a lot of grief too.

I don't know if there is any GFI involved.

It did charge my bike but at half the rate, and while I'm on a 9 or 10 hour shift thats no problem.

But is it likely to harm the bike? Do many people charge regularly on a Commando socket?

Again, I can't for say that it IS crappy power since I am not actually there to witness it BUT.... if that was the case, well, that's not doing you any favors.  The battery probably don't give a rats butt.  The charger may not be happy, mainly the caps in it, but the computer running is NOT going to be a happy camper.

Well its all about the battery ..... Which Zero was good enough to replace for me.
I'll give it another go.

These things don't have charging protocols, which normal charging stations and the bike itselve have and need to communicate and manage the charging process. I won't use this.

I don't know why people are mentioning CCS and communication, it's just an AC output like one would be using to charge at home. It's probably not a voltage issue at least as the onboard charger has quite a wide input range (100-264V). Could be frequency I guess, the charger wants 47-63Hz. You could get a kill-a-watt or similar to check it out.

Working well now. Charging amps between 9 and 11 at22%, between  7 and 14 at 78%.
1.4 KW (20% of 7.2KWh per hour)

I will try and upload a GIF When I get back onto broadband.

Now doing the same stopping and starting on my mother's domestic ac.

I suppose its an intermittent fault with the bike, the BMS or Charger possibly? As long as its not the battery.

I'm just pleased I can use the electricity at work. I reckon I could get the other things fixed - though my EV engineer tells me that Sevcon have changed how they license their software.
