Random "Undefined fault" at low speed 2023 SS9+
« on: June 06, 2024, 08:00:50 PM »

I randomly get undefined faults at while moving at low speeds (so far) on my 2023 SS9+, generally shortly after turning the bike on.
The bikes stops and needs to be turned off and on again to get back on the road.

Diagnostic screen indicates the following error codes :
P0601 - LOW LEVEL SAFETY ERROR
P0121 - THROTTLE FAULT (logic error)
P0120 - THROTTLE FAULT (physical Error)
P0562 - VCU MAIN SUPPLY UNDERVOLTAGE

Does the throttle need to be replaced ? Could this be a weather-proofing issue as this seems to happen after rainy days ?

Any insights/solutions would be much appreciated !

Sounds like something is getting wet that should not and is grounding out somewhere.  Could be a simple control wire bringing the 12v to ground on a loose plug or something.

Try starting with the throttle, following that wire, up the handlebar and all the way back basically to the battery / controller, checking any canon plugs, wire plugs, any connectors, give them a good wiggle and press to make sure they are tight.  If they are the rubber boot type etc, that looks like it's trying to be water proof, might want to open them up first, make sure they are not holding water under the boot or anything, then re plugging them back in nice and tight and making sure the rubber boot if there is one, is snug how it belongs on that connection.

Scenario:  A bit of water is bringing the signal to ground.  This is throwing the throttle faults, and since the voltage is maybe a small amount of volts low, because of the ground, it's throwing the power supply fault too.  It could have high enough impedance that it's not blowing any fuses, but just enough to drag the voltage down on that very small gauge wire.

The odd duck is P0562 has nothing to do w/ throttle 'cept it shares the same connector on VCU...J1A from 1st generation Eva schematic...

Suggest access VCU and make sure both connectors are seated but do not disconnect anything.

A follow-up : I went to the dealer and after a freeze-frame diagnostic (and an fw update) Energica is sending a replacement part.
I hope it arrives quickly and I'll let you know when I have more info.

The throttle error codes seemed to have been triggered only once while the more general problem is more frequent.

Could you please specify which part they are sending?

A quick update, I haven't had any more undefined faults since first posting here, nevertheless the VCU (front of the battery/behind the front wheel) has been replaced. Fingers crossed that solved the issue.

Good to hear it's running now!   But yah, if you have not gotten any more errors, that was most likely the problem.  Energica is a really good bike so you should not see any more issues like that hopefully.

The very first time I got an "undefined fault" was after a very large rainstorm with a flashflood, in Truckee, CA. I had to stop because the freeway turned into a river. It even stopped the cars for a minute or so.  I didn't even know this could happen there, but it was last summer.

I have wondered if my "undefined faults" were related to that. But riding on very hot days since then did not change anything. My last few charges were only at 11KW because the battery was hot. Close to 100° F (37.8° C). So I would think things would have dried off well by then.
