What can we do about the Bots
« on: September 27, 2023, 10:20:26 PM »

I mean on one hand I would like to welcome our new robot overlords, but on the other hand I don't want to be the one inadvertently adding to the text base, data collection phase of AI development here on this forum.

If the users can see the bots and call them out, can't the mods kick them off the board? Shadow ban them or something?

As I said in one of the bot threads, I've reported them but I don't think there are any regularly active mods. One of us who are on here every day needs to be granted some basic powers like being able to delete posts/threads, move them, and merge threads. I would volunteer but I only stick to the Zero and General sections.

Simple Machines is the software I use on my business webpage for my forum, and it's very easy to create another user group if you need and custom tailor the permissions they have.  Ie messages and kicking members etc.  You could create a sub group for just that purpose and the real members could self police the BOTstards.

Most moto forums are now run by mega-corps just for ad placement.  If this is one of those, you can expect very little mod help.  I got an offer to buy out the motorcycle forum I run, and let them turn it into the same (we have no ads and are member supported only).

That's really sad, but I can see it happening.
Everything and everyone it seems are just coin operated anymore.

Yah, getting rid of the bots would be counter intuitive for them as it'd get rid of their sleazy add placing mechanisms tool.

Come, the fuck, on dude.

Sexy girls in my area!!?!?!? Hook up invites!!!?!?!?!?

Spam with all the emoji's. Like it sticks out so much, there's probably a bot that can pick them out to delete.

It does seem to be happening more often on this site lately.  Every time I see one of these obvious spam post I report it to the moderator. But what is the point with the massed emojis posts? I really don't get that.  >:( What does the poster get out of it? At least the sexy girls might result in a click and nasty stuff being downloaded on to your computer. But emojis? Why those posts?  ???

FWIW the contact form on the Puppygames website is spammed constantly with this sort of shit, and I'm wondering, just exactly who are they expecting to read it or act on it? It's annoying because they've effectively rendered my support contact form useless.

I've run a mid-size moto forum for a couple decades.  I've had several offers from the megacorps to buy me out so they can put ads on it, and run it without any effort.  Like this place.  All you can do is report it and move on, don't reply.

We solved our spammer problem with two things.  First I deputized a bunch of well known members to be able to MOVE threads, not even delete.  They are moved to quarantine where they are only seen by admins/mods.  Second, we put two logic problems in the signup forms, and so far, almost none have made it past that.

It really IS easy to catch most of them at the gate, but it takes someone to give a shit.
apparently that is not here.

Part of the enshittification of everything is just taking ad revenue and providing zero support.

If you are relying on ad revenue to support your site, you are already fucked out the gate.  This get rich quick with advertisement seems to recycle itself every 5 or so years with the ad cash scam, and it always ends the same.  try to explain this to people but, well, good luck, their minds are made up they will make THOUSANDS, just putting this one tiny little add banner on the top of the page.....

well a small one in the lower corner wont hurt either....

well this one popup isn't too bad, it's behind the rest so it won't bother them.

I didn't put that porn up there, where did that come from????

who's code is this???

and it always ends the same.

Yes, making good money, which is why they keep doing it.  I've been involved with internet services since the 90s, and would argue that there are cycles, but it does always end up being very profitable.  I've run the test numbers on my own site potentially having ads, and it would be very lucrative.  But I would never do it.

So there's the one...you all know what the screen name is. It's necromancing all the old threads and posting in so many others it's rendering this whole forum unusable.

Like I don't want to encourage it by posting in the threads it's posted on.

As it reaches the forums I am posting on I'm out.

RIP EMF.

Is it the one with a string of random letters beginning with bng? I've only noticed it posting in the Other section, which I don't really frequent often so it hasn't been bothering me. I just went on its profile to check and noticed that although they have 26 posts only 7 are listed so it seems that at least some of them are being deleted by someone, but they're not bothering to ban them? There are three posts from a presumably banned account (just shows as a guest) with the same name in some other threads, so someone banned that one but didn't bother to clear up the mess they left behind? I don't want to criticise whoever is moderating too much but honestly it seems a bit half arsed, this bot has been signed up since the beginning of May and they're still here and posting.
