This may be obvious, maybe not...  You should get gloves made specifically for heated grips.  They have a much thinner layer on the heat input side (grip side) and much more protection on the top and sides.  That made a huge difference when I finally got some.  Regular gloves protect you from the heat just as much as they protect you from the cold.

But if you go down, how well do they protect you from the asphalt.  THAT afterall, is the reason for the gloves right?

I thought the reason was to keep your hands warm. I have no idea why you think heated grip gloves are less safe than normal winter gloves, so I really don’t know what to say. Mine were leather like any others.
