SR/F Hand Guards
« on: September 13, 2023, 11:43:26 PM »

Has anyone installed hand guards on their SR/F? Zero doesn't have any, and most accessory sites I've visited do not or have a disclaimer on the universal guards stating they may fit with or without modification.

For a bike like that, stylistically I would go with something like Oxford's premium hand guards. I've found that they offer superior wind protection than the off road guards I had before and being bar ends they're going to fit.

From having a quick look through Zero's accessories catalogue they say their bar ends and lever guards fit all models, so they all have the same internal diameter. The Oxford guards come with a few different size inserts anyway. Bear in mind that they do add maybe an inch in width to your bars, if you're one to do some tight filtering. This is because they have a freely rotating section that goes against the grip mean there's no chance of them jamming the throttle in the case of an impact. There's no need for it on the left but I guess it's done for the sake of symmetry, and it makes a nice fidget spinner to play with at stops. Another nice feature is you can adjust them in and out so that they clear the brake lever.

Try looking at racing sites, and racing equipment.  They often use them as brake lever protectors.  You racing and get close to someone and their handlebar hits your break lever, you are going to have a very bad day, very quickly.

For the SRS they aren't a good idea, for at least some people. I looked at where they would be if installed, and it completely blocks my view of those low mirrors. Oh well.

Don't you look below your hands on the SR/S?

No, over them. If it was below your hands your arms would be in the way visually. Maybe some really short people do? I dont.

Are you looking for impact protection, or cold wind protection?  I assume the latter since the SR/F is far from a dirt bike.  In that case, long ago I fitted a set of bar muffs on a bike, which you basically insert your hand into.  They are soft with a fuzzy liner, and just keep wind/rain off your hands.

Like this (though I don't know what brand they were).  https://www.amazon.com/KLIM-Deflect-Handlebar-Muffs-Black/dp/B07ZZLHPG7?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A2EKJBRC17BOTC

Thanks for the recommendations. Installed the Oxfords and they are fine. Getting tad cold in Minnesota now.

The thing to keep in mind with hand guards, heated grips etc.  They only heat / protect part of your hand.  Yes your inner hand is nice and toasty but the top of your hand still has icicles hanging from it!  Might want to opt for some sort of heated glove or something that accommodates your entire hand.

Just an opinion.

I use the heated grips until its cold enough, then I switch to the heated gloves. And for a few days in winter I use both at the same time. The problem I always had with grips only is keeping my fingertips warm.
That's why I was looking at guards originally, as wind block. But when I saw how it would interfere with the mirrors I got the heated gloves instead. Im kind of glad it worked out that way because the gloves + grips is the absolute end of my hands being cold.

Heated hand grips sound nice, but in reality.  Ok  so the bottom of my hands are toasty, what about the tops, and my finger tops, still exposed to the cold air, NOT being heated and getting frost bit?  If even part of your hand is miserable, then the whole hand is miserable IMO.
