DSR/X other accessories
« on: August 31, 2023, 02:18:46 PM »

Other than the centerstand which is covered in another recent thread in this section.

On the afternoon of 30, Aug 2023, I picked up my crash bars, side cases and travel trunk for my DSR/X from EuroCycles here in Reno.

No installation instructions at all for the crash bars, but they are very easy to figure out and install.

The instructions for the side cases and travel trunk were not bad. But it was a time-consuming job. I got done with installing all this stuff after midnight.

The travel trunk and side cases come from Germany. Trax stuff.

But this part pisses me off (means "mad" here in the USA, not "drunk" like as in some parts of Europe):

At first, I thought all six locks were missing.

But the instruction say they are extra and they are sold in a set of six for the price of 22 Euros, ordered from Germany.

The part number is ALK.00.165.16303

Click on link above and there and everywhere else I checked  it says "no longer available" .

Edit: I found them on E-Bay. Should be here in the middle of September. Cost $73.17, including taxes & shipping.

I can still use the stuff, but everything stays unlocked. Each item of the three should have two locks, one to lock to the bike and the other to lock the case. Six locks total I need.

BTW, here is what my DSR/X looks like now:

That's just stupid, I can't think of any logical reason why they wouldn't come with the locks. It doesn't look like they're anything special either, looks like a standard cam lock barrel used in things like cabinets and European lockers (I know you Yanks like to use padlocks).

I can think of one advantage of doing it this way. I assume the same key will be used for the side bags and travel trunk, unlike my other Zeros that have a separate key for the travel trunk that will not work for the side bags.

I just wish I knew to order the locks at the same time as I ordered the other stuff that took more than a month to get here from Zero.  But there are no indications that the locks will not be included. At least now others here know.

I am now in Virgina City, NV getting a free opportunity charge.

Here are a couple of better photos of the new stuff, including the missing six locks.

How much were the bags and mounts?  It is crazy that the bags don't include the locks.  I bought the Vario cases and top box for my R1250GS on eBay though a UK dealer and the locks come ready to match to your motorcycle key (which is kind of funny as the bike has keyless start).

The bike is looking good and ready to travel. Now you just need the rapid charger. I ordered my rapid charger two weeks ago and was told it would take at least a month to come in from Zero.

Right now, I am at the MCD across from where my bike is charging here for free.

I am kinda leaning against the extra charger for a couple of reasons:

1. I like as must storage space as I can get. I have my rather large tire air pump on the side of the tank where it requires screws to be removed to get to.

2. I can keep my valuable stuff in the locked section of the bike. Not many even knows what that section is.

3. I rarely need a charge for more than an hour as it is, and I find often the hour is not enough time when I start doing other things such as use this computer I am using right now.

But that doesn't mean I will not do it.  The Jury in my brain is still out.

I know the extra chargers cost 3K$ just for the part. What does the dealer charge you to install it?

But it is more the losing of storage space that I care about.

What would work better for me is an external charger that I can take only when I think I will need it. But that doesn't exist for the Zero DSR/X.

Here is a list of what tools and other items are needed:

For the crash bars:

5MM and 6MM Allen wrench bits.
*******************************
Here is what is needed for the Travel Trunk and side bags:

Torx T30.

4MM Allen wrench
5MM Allen wrench
6MM Allen wrench

10MM open end wrench
13 MM open end wrench

Star bit CT VT-10. This bit can be found in this set. (this is only for the six little limit straps inside the cases, not really needed, IMO).

Flush cutters or even a straight slot screwdriver or whatever works to pull out or cut out the four screw insert covers for the mounting of the top bracket of side cases. Look above rear wheel to see them.

Loctite type 242 (blue)

One set of six ALK.00.165.16303 locks.

In USA dollars:

Side bags, left and right $1,130.00
Mounts for bags $320.00

Top case: $525.00
top case mount: $145.00

Total before taxes is $2,120.00

While I am at it:

Centerstand $275.00
Frame Guards:$320.00

With taxes and all, everything above cost me a grand total of $2,939.40

The reason I am getting the rapid charger is there are few chargers available. If I need to charge away from home the distance to the charger has used all my range and every time I have charged on the road took over two hours to get enough charge to get home. I hate giving up the storage and adding the extra weight but I value the time saving more. Around here it’s 80 to 100 miles between chargers.

So the total cost is $3,420.00.  $420.00 sounds like a reasonable price for the installation. I wonder if that is a flat rate price from Zero.

Of the three charge stations I used yesterday, none can handle the 12KW. But VC was good for 8KW (on a single cable) and I could have hogged up two 6.5 KW charge stations when I was in Yerington, NV.

I am not sure if the other in Gardenville, NV is shared power or not, but it is a single 6.6 KW Chargepoint with two charge cables.

I am really leaning against doing such, even if it were for free.  If I am in a hurry, I will take an ICE bike. I am retired, never in a hurry and I enjoy the charge stops every 70 miles or so.

Also, it making the bike a bit more top heavy is an issue, but how much does the charger weigh?

Now that I have all the extra luggage stuff installed, perhaps I can get by with a little less space.  Jury is still out, but still leaning against the idea, perhaps around 75/25%. 6.6 KW charging is reasonable enough for me.

An external charger I would buy for sure, as long as I can carry it when needed in my luggage. Kinda like what I do with my 2017 SR that I charge at 7.9 KW where possible.

I also wonder if the stock charger can be set up to work as external. But I think the bike has to be programmed for it. But perhaps I can do that with my Zero thingy I ordered, if it ever gets here.

BTW, what will you use for connection the two charge station cables together to go into your single J-1772 socket on your bike?

The total price is $3,676.00 with tax.  At most locations I ride to they have the 16w 80 amp Tesla destination chargers. There are also some 80 amp Wattzilla chargers around too.
I was on the fence about buying it too until I saw the charging curve someone posted on Facebook. It was holding a full 12 kw past 80%. I feel sure it will cut the charging time for me so I pulled the trigger. Just waiting on Zero to ship it now. That could take a while.

Have you used a Tesla-Tap on the 14KW (60-amp) Tesla Destination Stations?  I have noticed when a Tesla Tap are used on these, they often drop out within five or ten minutes, usually going into alarm (red light on the TDS).

My orders from Zero took about six weeks to get to the dealer from Zero. Different items came in on different days, all within a few days of the other. My centertand came in a few days before all the other stuff that I ordered on July 18, which I picked up on Wednesday afternoon, Aug 30.

There are a few high-power Tesla stations around here, and a couple of high-power J plugs. But not always where I want them. But there are a couple that I think I would use fairly often, such as this one.  That is one place where I would appreciate the faster charging as it is in route of many of my favorite rides into the CA eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains of east CA.

Jury is still out. I could buy it myself just to stop thinking about it. BTW, is the charger being shipped to you or your Zero dealer?  I really wish I could install it myself, especially to see if there is a way to do it as an external charger.
