Toyota Prius PHEV

I've been using a five year old 40k mile Prius PHEV, mostly in full EV mode for a year now. And that's it: drive, charge, drive, charge and so on.

No faults, no error messages, no regular updates, no magic charging etc. A battery health check was performed by the Toyota dealer at the annual service: all good.

Do Zero need to talk to Toyota?

Toyota is the epitome of quality mindset. Zero compared is a teenager with learning diffculties. I'd give more about Toyota building electric motorcycles than Zero changing their mindset.

Isn't Zero moving their manufacturing to the phillippines now or somewhere like that?  If this is the case, expect quality to take an even further nosedive.

Not just Toyota, the Japanese in general have a very high regard for quality.  It's their reputation and their culture is very strongly built upon that.  Over the years, some of their companies tried to 'Americanize' (ie cut corners and make cheap shit) and it didn't work out for them, most are gone now.  Given their propensity for electronics and well, nerdy products, im surprised we have not seen a lot more e vehicles from Japan, especially Bikes, they like their cycles and scooters too!

So no battery health recommendations from Toyota?

Here are some we get in the Owner's Manual from Zero:

  • if you haven’t ridden it for a long while and need to charge it to 100% SoC, plug it in to the charger for a few hours prior to your ride. Unplugging the charger when not needed ensures the best long-term health of your power pack.
  • Leaving your motorcycle unplugged between charges will maximize the long term health of the power pack.
  • If stored long term, check the state of charge at least monthly and charge it back up to 60% if it has dropped below 30%.
  • If the motorcycle is connected to the charger while in long term storage mode, the maximum SoC will be limited to 60%.
I remember reading that energy density is a crucial consideration for electric motorcycles. Even more so than for cars, motorcycle batteries need being minimal in weight and volume. I guess this comes at the cost of user-friendliness.
