Hi Zero enthusiasts,

  Is anyone willing to help me interpret these logs, or better yet, guide me to resources so I can do this independently and help others?  I'm looking at a used bike logs and trying to anticipate battery health and range expectations plus perhaps any other issues I'm overlooking completely.  Although the trips taken are short and lower speed, I'm extrapolating a 100%-00% range of 100-160 km at 60 kph.  This seems far below expect performance values, but it could easily be that I'm not looking at this right.  I have some experience with looking at MBB logs, mostly for errors, but limited experience is evaluating MBB logs. 

  My real concern is being able to comfortably make a one-way commute at 45 miles and 70 mph in all weather, with the option to charge at work.  Bike is a 2nd gen Zero SR.

I would greatly appreciate anyone's opinion on the health of this bike, or again some pointers on education so I can do this myself.

Dear Domingo,

could you send me the 2 files with bin extension?
Than I could try to run them through my python / excel file.

Are you able to make the one-way commute of 45 miles? (up and down, do you drive up a mountain?)
How much SOC does your dash show when you do the 45 miles commute?


It is not really possible to determine range expectations from the logs; This since the log does not show how the driver is accelerating and if it is raining.
It could only give you a broad estimate.



Battery health
I check the battery health by charging the bike till 100%, than driving it till it won’t turn on anymore. (make sure the battery is empty around your house since you will be pushing it home).
Then I look at the "Discharge level xxx AH". If you have a Nominal battery capacity of 12.6kWh the maximum "Discharge level" should reach about  126 Ah = 12600Wh / ~100V (theoretically)

Last week I drove till 0% SOC on the dash, 5% SOC in the logs (the SOC on the dash is not the same as the SOC of your BMS), and I had a discharge level of about 111 Ah.

Range estimate
If you really want to have an range estimation…. Which will only give you a broad general indication…
you have to drive the rest of the SOC under the same circumstances etc.

You can use the starting SOC% and ending SOC% of a ride, together with the starting ODO km with ending ODO km.
Your expected range = (ending ODO km - starting ODO km) / (starting SOC% - ending SOC%) * 100
Your expected range = (7207- 7153) / (72 - 34) * 100
Your expected range = 54 / 38 * 100
Your expected range = 142 km

142 km = 88.2 mile

Bike use
Having calculated all this; from your logs; and looking at my own experience with my Zero S 2019.
Here in the Netherlands I would not worry about a 45 mile commute driving 70 mph in all weather conditions.
Do have to charge each 45 mile commute tho.

Your BMS log jumps several times from 2022 to 2023 years in the dates !
It seems completely crazy.
How did you extract it ?

For a Zero S it seems that a good estimate is around 120 to 125 Wh/km at 70 mph
The nominal capacity of a 14.4 pack is 12.6 kWh
You can expect this capacity since the pack seems quite good
12600Wh / 126Wh/km = 100 km = 62 miles
So you can expect around 60 miles at 70 mph.
Of course, as you know, it depends on a lot on other factors: aerodynamics, wind, temperature, and also take into account that at that speed, the voltage will decrease much more, so that at the end you will certainly not be able to keep the 70 mph.

Thank you all for the replies.

Some additional detail.  This bike is located very far away from me.  I could not extract the logs myself, and these text files were given to me in response to my request.

  My apologies for the mix of units that I posted. The logs are in SI units (which I prefer)So I posted those where I read them or made simple calculations, but then wrote my requirements is the "bald eagles pre square rifle" ® because I was lazy.

This bike for sale has a relatively new 14.4 kWh battery on it and low use. As I said, I expect it should get a lot better performance than what the logs show unless they were drag racing or something with it (I could only average speed over time due to sample periods).

At steady riding and the warm weather indicated, it doesn't seem to be doing better than my 2016 SR ZF 13, which does fine in the summer, but can't keep up high speed at freezing temperatures. Again, I'd expect a new and larger battery to show more efficiently even in warmer weather.
