FOB as passive
« on: March 25, 2023, 10:25:25 AM »

Not sure if this works for all models with a FOB. But this is something all FOB users should know and try.

There are three ways to start the Energica Experia that uses a FOB (I assume other FOB models as well, see the Owner's Manual for the location to put the dead FOB for your model).

The three ways:

1. Using the normal working FOB, using it as active.
2. Using a totally dead FOB, using it as passive.
3. Using the PIN number with no FOB at all.

So just to be sure I know how to do it, in case I have the need, I just tried this:

I took the battery out of my FOB to prevent it as working as an active device.

I put the dead (no battery inside) FOB just to the right of the bike's screen, held against the fairing.

I turned on the keyless of the bike. It did NOT ask me for a PIN number, and it started up normally.

IMO, we should all be sure how to do this.

FWIW, the battery is a single CR2032 inside the Experia FOB.

Another interesting note. If you have no FOB at all, as I did l two weeks ago, when I went to the Placerville Tesla Charger to try it out. . .

I accidently brought my FOB to Reno the week before and left it there without the bike.

If the PIN number is put in three times incorrectly, the bike goes dead meaning a tow truck if I cannot get the FOB back to the bike. Even a dead FOB should then work. I was lucky, as I wasn't being extra careful. I had no idea then about the after three times I would have to call a tow truck.

My 2022 Chevy Bolt uses something similar. I can unlock the doors and run the car with a totally dead FOB. There I also needed to know now to do it just in case, so I took the battery out of that FOB as well to make sure I could still drive the car by the procedure in the Owner's Manual. That FOB battery is also a CR 2032. I keep spare FOB batteries with my vehicles, but I think it is a good idea for all of us to practice with a dead FOB as other things can make it crap out besides the battery.

My Eva firmware pre-dates the PIN feature which sounds like a winner.  FOB works in all cases w/o nuisance and speedo is off by easy math 10% , SOC, range and charge estimates by VCU are consistent and can be correlated to 1% consumption per mile as overall average kinda sucky but base-drag from top box and sport bias riding style are likely cause.  Good info about passive FOB bets are though it will not work on dated firmware.

Are you saying there is no backup to the FOB of any type on your bike? What do you do if the FOB craps out?

The bike comes with 3 fobs. At least mine did.
An active fob - the one you are supposed to use all the time.
A backup fob - inactive that you have to hold next to the bike to turn it on
A master fob - that you can use to program new fobs if you buy other ones.

Ideally if your fob craps out you use it in 'dead mode' or use your backup until a new one arrives, then program it to your bike and you in theory are good to go again.   Otherwise it's a trip to the shop to have the whole ignition module replaced.

I think you mean the immobilizer module. But which year and model are you referring to?  My Experia only came with one FOB, but it can do all three by itself.

MY other FOB vehicles all came with two FOBS.

I should mention here a FOB bug in my Harley, in case it can happen in other bikes.

When my Harley FOB battery gets weak, it will not start the bike, which is fine. But it also then will NOT ask for a PIN number which is not so fine.  So the FOB has to be removed far from the bike to start it with the PIN. Or the FOB battery needs to be removed or replaced to start the bike.

Please explain the FOB short cut to me. From my previous profession I only know this as Fuel On Board...
Thank you.

I do not have any idea what you're asking. What shortcut? I was explaining how to start the bike with a broken FOB without using a pin number. The word "FOB" is not an acronym. It's a full single word, in this case.

The FOB (or "Key FOB") is the thingy some motorcycles use for a keyless ignition.

Hi Don,

now I got it. I didn't know the word fob. I looked it up on the web. Usually when a word is written in capitals I assume an abbreviation. As you may have seen, english is not my mother tongue...

Thanx anyway, Chris

You're right.  I should have used "fob" instead of "FOB".   A habit because the word looks like an acronym, but it isn't.
