the range estimator on my '16 FX isn't doing as well as it used to. When I leave with 100% charge, it drops precipitously to 90% after 2 miles, 80% after 4 miles, 70% after 6 miles. But then as it reaches 60% and 50%, it starts to decrease more slowly and the panic lets off. I'm going to want to do a full range test as the weather improves to determine the true remaining battery capacity. To your experience, maybe the same thing is happening; the range estimation is pessimistic at first, then progressively more optimistic.
I have experienced the exact same behavior on my 2016 FXS. Some explanation could be there :

But at the present time I cannot tell if it is a problem with the firmware that computes a bad SOC, or a problem with the battery that does not behave as in the past.
I am trying to monitor my batteries with the ZeroSpy application (for Android). It gives in real time many usefull information. For instance the min and max voltages of all the cells, that shows you the balance. And it also records all these data each second of time, so it can help to diagnose...

The best bet to determine your range is KW left times 7 for miles left, as a general starting point, then adjust slightly by your driving habits.  An easier way to just figure that each percent of charge left is a mile left for a 14 kw battery pack and maybe 1.5 miles for the 20 plus kw bikes.  Otherwise, using the bikes 'brain' will give you an aneurism every time you go out for a ride.

Ooh, I got 45 miles left,.. then I romp on it and do 120 mph for a mile or so... oh, I only drove 3 miles and it says I only have 18 miles of range now.. oh crap traffic jam,  so I do another 3 miles averaging about 20 to 30 mph stop and go ish... wow i got 65 miles of range left now !!! .... so which one is right?   ALL OF THEM ARE!!

It looks at your last bit of driving and calculates by that.  It also has NO idea what your anticipated remaining drive will be like either.

I believe it's not FW, as I've never upgraded yet the range calculation has changed dramatically.

Today the range fluctuated greatly depending on throttle intensity. I got on Central Expw at 54%, dropping to 19% in the space of 4 miles, while recovering a little at stop lights. After parking for 3 hours, it had "magic charged" back to 44%, then ran down to 11% on the 6 miles home.

I took the opportunity to ride the range down to 0% (and then some) until I felt hiccupping. Total distance since full was 39 miles. Granted, I had done 60 mph for much of that. But I suspect what's happening is the SOC is closely related to battery voltage (as in your link), the voltage must be sagging more dramatically than ever, and the batteries may not last more than 7 to 8 years even though I've made efforts to keep the batteries near mid range every night.
