Balancing battery question.

Hello, Sorry if this was asked before but I just got my 2023 ss9 and while picking it up 2 days ago at the dealer it was displaying 98% and balancing. The salesmen said it was fine to unplug and pulled it off the charger.
Will that have any lasting negative effects?

On the same subject, does anyone know how long it takes to balance and get from 98% to done? I've only ever done it overnight, but my failed daytime attempts indicate the answer is "really really long -- like more than two hours."

No problem at all. Once in a while let it charge to 100% for better cell balancing. Most of the time it is best to disconnect at 80% SOC.

I find that it usually works out well to only charge to 100% when needed for the best range and charge to 80% SOC at other times. IOW, I normally don't even think about it and it comes out about right.

My SS9 screen says somewhere above 80% it is best to NOT disconnect so balancing will be completed. You can ignore that message. Just let it get to 100% once in a while and all should be fine. It's really best to NOT charge to 100% often, so it's best to ignore that message. I often disconnect mine at 90 or 95% SOC while that message is displayed.

It takes longer for that last 2% SOC than any other 2% increase, but not two hours. Could take 20 minutes or so using the 3K charger. A lot less on a DC fast charge.


Are you charging with 120 VAC or 240 VAC?


One thing I never really understood is why the charge rate must go down a lot lower near the end but can be a lot more if you start with a higher charge. IOW, why is more than 1.5KW not safe when starting with a 3 KW AC charger, but a 6KW is safe with a fast DC charger?


I find charging EVs kinda weird. Moreso with Zeros. With a Zero put on a 6KW charger and you will get two KWS if above 80% SOC when the charge starts, never more all the way to 100% SOC. But if you start the charge at 20% SOC, you will have the full six KWs when it gets to that same 80% SOC.

Cell balancing may start well below 98%. I have a 2023 RS with just over 2K miles on it and have seen cell balancing start at 95%. Once watched it reach 99% and it took an hour to reach 100% from there.

How do you know where the balancing starts? I have seen the message about cell balancing come on my screen at 80% SOC.

Balance starts typically at 95% SOC on the newer bikes.  Suppose, if you see balance starting sooner, it means the weakest cell reached full capacity well before the rest - not sure current firmware allows balance phase to start before 95% SOC.  Time to balance is proportional to state of unbalance and don't expect to reach full balance in one charge session if state of unbalance is severe.  4-amp charge current used to top off healthy cells matches the discharge rate that all charged cells are allowed to dissipate charge when balance mode is active.

The balancing message comes on almost every time my pack is nearing 100%. I let it finish sometimes but often I just ignore it. There's no way it needs to be balanced super often all the way to 100. Probably just the way it's programmed.
