So my 2016 dsr finally had its first hiccup after 6 years of ownership and 60k KMs.

Had a good run, the onboard charger is dying, I need a replacement, I would like to have a direct replacement so I can still plug it into the wall from home, but would also like a faster option if it's available.

What are my options and where can I buy them?

If you are in the US you can try here for the Calex unit.  I don't see one offered at the moment but you can check with them.

Faster will be to buy a Zero Delta Q charger. Much more reliable but slightly less power. Will take a little longer to charge to full.  Some Zero dealers keep them in stock.


It's an external charger.



And after you replace the OBC you can still use the DeltaQ for faster charging.


If you use the DeltaQ without the OBC, you will have to key on the bike first to start the charge.

I guess I didn't understand your question. You're not going to find an OBC that will fit your DSR that is more powerful than the stock OBC. It's about 1.4KW and that is really pushing the limit for its size.


And when you said "faster" I wasn't sure if you meant charge faster or receive the charger faster.

I have my doubts if the newer one is any more reliable. Still 1.4 KW is a lot to ask from such a charger that is not cooled and in that small size. It's a switching power supply that have countless ways to fail and luck is what is most important. It will probably last longer if you never use 120 VAC as it's more efficient on 240 VAC which means less heat inside the OBC. But failures will be random.


I think the newer ones are probably redesigned to cause less radio interference more so than anything else.

That's it.

You have to use a dealer near you other wise.
They have to be programed to work with Zero's setup so you can't just grab something from Amazon.

I wonder why I couldn't find that when I searched for it. I could only find the FX OBC which is different.

The website could use some improvement, I could only find it by searching for the part number (ZM + Zero part number).
