Firmware updating tip for SR/S
« on: July 29, 2022, 10:09:39 PM »

My firmware wouldn't update from the iPhone, no matter what version of the app. Always timed out with an error.

I noticed that in my garage, the cellular signal was only one bar, so I switched it off and went WiFi only. Both firmware updates went through immediately without any trouble.

Hope that helps someone..

I actually had the same problem.
It worked better with wifi nearby.
I had also waited for the bike to return to room temperature after charging, and before updating.
but alas, my 3g connection still does not work on my sr/s 2021.

Once again an update would not go through until I turned off cellular on my iPhone. As I have the current model, there is an eSim and so just turning off cellular data wasn't enough - I had to select the "Turn on this line option" and make sure it was totally disabled.

So here the path would be through the internet, your home wifi, or somebodies, then through bluetooth to the bike?

The cellular at my house is not good. The bike never updates on its own, and the phone app usually fails too. Last time, the bike was rendered unusable. It was locked up somehow, and the dealer had to come get it, reset something, and put the updates in.

They broke plastic tabs on the bodywork and told several differing lies about it. Then they finally admitted it was their fault after I showed them a video of the bike as they were picking it up, and you could see they were not broken. So they said they would order replacement parts and install them. Which was, it turns out, also a lie so I would leave the store. I was so put off by this that I had resolved to click "Postpone" at the start of each ride forever and not take the chance.

Never , EVER want to go back to that store. Which is Sky PowerSports in Sanford, FL. F you guys. I'd probably truck it to a different city to go to another Zero dealer if need be.

But this sounds like it might be an easy way to get ride of the update prompt. I'll try it. Good idea!

you're out of luck.
I too have a bad dealer in France.
they mixed up the screws and screwed up the fairings.
since my last visit to them, no more 3g connection.
I hope that the next updates will solve my problem.

Anyone got any more tips for getting a firmware update to work? Last one worked first go but this MBB 26 has failed so many times now I've lost count. I've tried my phone in a number of different locations and with mobile data or wifi turned off and it keeps failing. I think it may be the Bluetooth to the bike losing connection but I don't know what I can do to help it.

I keep thinking I've found the trick but then it lets me down again. What I do with some success is:
  • Open storage box
  • Put any other bluetooth divces out of range (watch, etc.)
  • Close all phone apps manually
  • Hold phone hear opening of storage box. (Insidethe box worked once but has also failed.)
Zero should be so embarassed how bad this is.

Hey John just to let you know I turned off cellular data on my phone last night, started the update from the phone on my house wifi, and it succeeded on the second try, which was amazing. There may be something to this.

Of course there were the usual Zero glitches... failed the first time, and then after that failure "Manage Firmware" was somehow missing from the app for about 10 minutes. Weird. When it came back I tried again. This time it went to the end and said "Waiting For Motorcycle" on the app. This lasted for about 10 minutes until the dialog box popped up that said the update had failed, key the bike off and try again in a few minutes. I was worried this had bricked my bike like it did last time but it was alive. I closed the app, reopened it, and check firmware from there and it said everything was updated.

My cell service is not great at my house, not great at all. That could have been one of the problems. I sure hope I never have to update again to get a prompt to go away, but if I do I'll use this method again. Thanks!

In retrospect, would it not have been wise to add an option to download the update, put it on a USB, or some such, maybe even download it to your phone,  and connect to the bike  by a USB cable, once the entire file is in possession? Bluetooth data transfer is SLOW.

Decided to come on here to see why my update attempts to Version 26 keep failing. This is not my first rodeo. I have had my bike since March 2020 and have done all my updates myself at home in my garage. Same phone, same wifi, same everything. Something is not right here.

Tried turning off cellular data and got about 60% of the firmware download before it failed again. Big improvement but still failed in the end.

OTA (Over The Air) software updates are such a common thing that there's even an acronym for it. It's a solved problem. How Zero (or maybe their sub-contracted app developers) have got this so badly wrong is a mystery.

I took my 2020 SR/S Premium into the dealer for an overdue annual service plus brake fluid change. They naturally updated the firmware and bms. I was surprised to see the new dash design when I picked up the bike. Very different! It will take some getting used to. I had also updated the app on my iPhone when I was unsuccessfully attempting to update the firmware myself. So I guess I am good to go, until the next upgrade.

Just an FYI about these firmware updates:

If you are like me and have decided NO MAS to firmware updates because they cause so much trouble... Its a bit embarrassing to say this but I never noticed until about 2 days ago that you don't have to manually choose "Postpone" to ride using the OSD controls on the handlebar. The banner disappears on its own when you arm the bike.

So, if you don't mind seeing that banner on power up until you lift the side stand to take off, you can leave it that way forever and never have to deal with these ridiculous problem firmware updates again. That's what I'm doing.

My last update (26 to 27 MBB) went without a hitch first time. However, it did take a ridiculously long time to update. Even longer than usual. Is this an improvement? I suppose so.
