Zero Next Gen App v2.2.6
« on: July 21, 2022, 06:18:11 AM »

Zero just updated their Next Gen App to version 2.2.6.  I don't yet know what they tried to fix, but they now have a new major bug.  The app crashes every time I select Manage Ride Modes on the Performance page.  After every two or three tries I get the following message:

"Something went wrong with Zero Next Gen

Zero Next Gen closed because this app has a bug.

Try updating this app after its developer provides a fix for this error."

So Zero has done nothing to improve their software V&V procedures.  Has anyone else seen this or is it just me?

I am one of the people who had their speed limited to 106mph previously, and had the dealer do some sort of workaround that locked it in CANYON mode but regained full speed, so long as I didnt reconnect with bluetooth.
The engineer I've been conferring with advised to wait until the app was updated/fixed before trying again. Last night I tried it. In the Play store, the app notes specifically it is for the 106mph issue among others.

1 I updated the app and connected. When doing this and selecting Manage Ride Modes, it said the app had a bug and needed to close.
2 Tried again, this time it said clear cache for the app. I did
3 Tried again, this time and every time when trying to select Manage Ride Modes, it would immediately close.
4 Deleted/reinstalled app. Now it appeared to work perfectly. I was able to create a custom mode and have the parameter for 124mph persist in the app, even when power cycling the ignition key and disconnecting/reconnecting with bluetooth. Success!!!!  ( wait for it....  ::))
5 Rode to work today. Speed is now once again limited to 106 mph. The app still shows 124 mph in my custom mode, which is different from the last time it had this issue.

But... 106mph.

I emailed the engineer today.

Dont try this app yet if you have that 106 issue!!!!

Did you also install FW v23?? Looks like you need both these on the bike for the top speed to be at 124mph. I am suggesting this because the release notes of FW v23 also indicates that it fixes the top speed issue.

Not yet. I thought I would email the engineer first and if he didn't get back to me quickly I would try that, because its already broken, so to speak. The firmware update section of the app tells me there are updated main board and battery management revisions. You may well be right about that. The next time I will use my bike is this saturday, and if he has not provided any guidance by friday night I will try updating them and see what happens.

Per 2020_SRS_Commuter's post I uninstalled and reinstalled the app.  I already had MBB v23 installed, but I also upgraded to MBB v24 and BMS v20 (just released, but with no release notes).  Manage Ride Modes now works, but the max speed for SPORT and CANYON modes is now 124 mph.

The app is still the same old shit.  ::)

I can't log in because an account with my email doesn't exist. I can create an account because an account with that email does exist. It still fails to update the firmware - but will probably eventually manage it after 20 attempts like last time.

I love my SR/F but hate this app. Luckilty I only need to use it when there's a new firmware update.

I had the issue with 2.2.6 on Android 11 crashing out when I selected Manage Ride Modes.  Got it working by clearing cache and app data but had to go through the faffy first start process again.

Today I tried updating the firmware through the app and did not succeed, even after somewhere between 20-30 tries. I have today off so I made many attempts to the garage while doing other stuff to give it another go. The engineer did not reply to my email ( yet  )

Here is some info hopefully someone finds useful, or maybe can even offer a suggestion to me:

On the motorcycle display, it shows "FW Ver. 6V26". Automatic updates are "OFF" and I cant find a way to change it. "Cellular" shows as "Not Connected" and did not change state during any firmware update attempts.

The cellular connection does seem to work however, as I can turn off phone bluetooth, and using "Remote Connectivity" on the app see if my bike is connected and charging, or not.

My cell service on my phone at my house is all bars. I've updated firmware on this motorcycle in this same place, my home, several times before. I also tried having my phone connected to wifi, and not.

The app says my current firmware is 20 for MBB and 19 for BMS, and says 24 for MBB and 20 for BMS is available for update.

Whenever I tried, either the app said the update failed, turn off the bike and try again in three minutes, or else it stopped and said I need to be connected to my motorcycle first.

I tell ya man.... this motorcycle is great, I absolutely LOVE the vehicle itself... 25k glorious miles so far... but this connected aspect of it is pure rubbish. It has not been fully functional for almost 1/2 the time I've owned it and its still not right. Just seeing the word "CANYON" pisses me off. If I could ONLY get it back working right I would reject any updates they ever offer again. And if by chance I am in the market for a new electric bike someday I would investigate other brands first.

Why? Why? Seriously. Why? Candy Crush can update no problem. Why cant they? Why cant they just admit failure, roll all the bikes back to where they could choose their speeds, power, and torque as you wish, and leave it the F alone? So disappointing.

So its 3AM EST now. I was up late and wondered if, perhaps, Zero had some sort of bandwidth issue or something and maybe I might have better luck in the middle of the night. Tried once, if failed right away. Went to get a beer, came back and tried again. This time the progress bar went all the way across in about 8 min or so, the app said "Waiting for Motorcycle", and something clicked inside the bike. Then.... nothing.

After 5 minutes I tried toggling first the kill switch, then the ignition switch, and it remained in the same state. The motorcycle menu is on, I can navigate the menu with the handlebar control, but the bike is otherwise dead. It wont run, the headlight is off, and nothing else happens. The display will not turn off. Currently at 40 SOC and will not charge if I put the charger in. The app will no longer connect to the bike.

Its dead.

Awesome.

No, I cant do that. Cant turn it on or off. Its "bricked" as the kids say of phones. The display is on and wont turn off, but otherwise, its completely lifeless. Turning the key does nothing. The headlight is off, it wont run, no accessory power, nothing.

I raged for about a half hour until I had to accept Zero ruined a perfectly working bike, if they had only left it the F alone as I bought it.
That's the way it is and there is nothing I can do about it.

It went from perfect, to crippled at a partial power, to dead.

Unloaded all my stuff, took off the luggage, disconnected the 12V battery so the display wouldn't drain that little battery dead, and in the morning I'll call some service to take it up to the dealer where I don't expect to see it again for a long time, if ever.

Some bright points... its not my only bike -  a fuel burner is waiting right next to it to take its place. And gas has come down a bit. AND, the Zero is still under warranty.

Thanks for your sympathies!

Beware everyone of this app and updates.

The firmware version shown on the dash, 6V26, is the dash firmware version.  You can only view the MBB and BMS versions on the app.

Thanks, didn't know that! The dealer is sending a transport tomorrow to pick it up. I tried reconnecting the 12v briefly to see if anything had changed this morning and the bike no longer shows the state of charge, it shows 0%. Since it was at 40 a few hours ago I hope and assume the pack is still there at 40% but the bike doesn't know about it.  So I disconnected the 12v again.

Just a note of hope for you.
I did have the exact same symptoms when I tried to update mine from V21 to V23. The display was frozen, turnig the key off and On did nothing and I had to disconnect the 12 v battery as well. I trailered it to the dealer and they were able to restart the bike by disconnecting the MBB (2 plugs) and resetting the BMS. They reloaded the firmware (V23) and everything returned to normal.
Lessons learned: I will wait for the new update and probably booked an appointment with the dealer for them to perform the update as it is done free of charge according to a recent note form Zero.
My bike is running perfectly well actually and there is still no detail about the most recent firmware version (MBB V24, BMS V.20)

Good luck

So I had my bike lock up twice when trying to update. The first time I swore I would not try to update again but I was fooled that this last app version corrected firmware update issues and stupidly tried again. The display would remain on and keying on or off would do nothing.  Also disconnecting the 12v battery and pulling the MBB fuse did not resolve the issue.  Each time the only thing that would resolve the issue was disconnecting battery, pulling the tank and disconnecting the 2 plugs on the MBB.  It would return to normal but not have applied the update.i guess I won't get the firmware updated until I can ride the bike the 60 miles into the dealer to have them do it.  For a bike so dependent on computer software to run, it disappoints me Zero's software is so bad.  I used to be a huge proponent of Zero, talking them up at the bike meets.  Now I would not be able to recommend the bike to anyone.  Shame, I would really love the bike if it only operated the way it was advertised.  My 2003 Suzuki ICE bike is more dependable than my 2020 SRF.  This will probably be my last Zero.
