I do road tripping in western Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany) and my go-to app is Shell Recharge, with Plugshare as a back up.

Regarding your range, I have had a DSR 13.0 that did 144Km of almost flat highway @ 90km/h, so your 80Km on a 14.4 sounds a bit off. I also had the pleasure of riding a SR/S for two weeks and did about 2000km on it (1200 commute, 800 for fun) and when driving around 80km/h the range was 150km easy...

Ow, I almost forgot! Check abetterrouteplanner.com, the BEST planner for EV trips IMHO. Feed it your bike, tweak the usage and it will calculate the leg of your trip including charge stops!

I did now three summer vacation with my SR/S and need to say, that something with your bike must be wrong. With both Shad Cases I get 150km of range and more. I did trips in Austria, Croatia, Italy, Switzerland and France (I love the alps). In all three trips we had been a group of 3 or 4 drivers - all other are fossil bikes. The daily trip length is 250-350km, I never go on highways. Overall I had no problems with range or charging, but I had problems with mechanical reliability (broken sprocket, heavy rain caused electronic failures). Climbing the highest mountain passes (I think I did at least 50 passes > 2000m) had no negative impact on range at all. Actually it is the other way round: You get higher range in the mountains since the average speed will drop due to the narrow bends.

I am planning each day trip for the entire vacation in advance. This is my strategy:
  • Start with the "perfect route". What would you do this day with a gas bike?
  • What would be the "perfect brake spots" on this route? In particular I am looking for great spots to get lunch or some coffee break
  • I write an email to the owner of these spots and ask him or her, if I can charge my bike - preferable with CEE16 (heavy current). This works in approx 50% of all cases (>80% if this is also a Hotel)
  • Look at public charging stations on the route. I am using TomTom for planning that will show them nicely in the map with your route. If the charge stop at a public station takes more than 10-15 minutes look out for options to take a break nearby. If required slightly adjust your route. Please note: Some of these public charging stops are at locations where you absolutely want to make a break.

Keep in mind: Your gas bike friends will be upset if they need to wait one hour at an ugly charging station. Even 30 minutes will be a stretch for your friends. Only charge when and where you want to break. BTW: In my opinion a abetterrouteplanner is not a great tool planning motorbike trips since leisure quality is not a routing factor.

Thanks for sharing your story! Fascinating to hear how it all played out - very glad it worked out in the end.

I live in the US but I've been to Norway numerous times for both work and play. Such a wonderful country. Any chance you can share the route you rode?

I've been kicking around the idea of this tour for years : https://www.ayresadventures.com/norwegian-midnight-sun/

Not an EV thing.

I'm not thrilled with the idea of a guided / group tour but the idea of a south -> north ride that starts in Oslo and makes its way up to the North Cape is very compelling. You get to walk away from the bikes at the end of the route which means that you don't have to plan a loop. I might end up doing it within the next couple of years with my wife as a pillion.

@zend thank you,  and sure, I'm happy to share my route. It's absolutely an amazing trip. :)

I started off in Oslo and went all the way to Kalvåg, Google maps should give you the route in the attachment if you enter these locations. I did a lot of detours from this route as well, since I have relatives on the way. Many areas on the way is worth exploring.

The trip is now over, and I am safely back in Oslo. Will do a final writeup, but in the meantime, here are a few pics from the trip. :)

(I got to do one post per image as this forum has a size restrictions on attachments)

First out is an amazing lake called Jølstravatnet. The trip around it was absolutely amazing, with majestetic mountains all around.

This was my home on the trip. I got the whole tent and a sleeping bag into one of the side cases, with space to spare.

I got used to this sight. In the end I charged about 20 times. One hour per charging in average, Phew. I did appreciate the frequent resting time though, as it is not a good idea to drive for too long in one stretch anyway.

Ever changing weather and time of day created many interesting moods, this early morning mist was captured as I was setting out home on the final leg of the journey
