Extended period without AC charging
« on: July 07, 2022, 07:48:30 PM »

I'm planning a month long tour around Europe in August racking up something like 5000km (3k miles) and with my luggage list mounting I'm eying those bulky AC cables angrily. Has anyone got experience of doing this kind of extended distance on DC charging only? I'll give it a good zero-max balance charge before departure but should I expect charge status weirdness?

I have a 1.5 meter (5 feet) level 2 16amp single-phase charging cable, the only bulky is the connectors. Really small.

If it's anything like the USA, expect around half of the CCS chargers to not work.

Thank (Fill your favorite deity here) Europe's not the barren wasteland the USA is. When it comes to CCS charging, that is.

The occasional charger might not work (Had an Ecotap bork on me today in the black hole they call De Kempen, Belgium), and sometimes CSS is just not available (Northern Luxemburg and the Eiffel, anyone?) but you can plan and be sure 99% of the chargers work. Especially the Netherlands, we looooove CCS here.

In the state of Nevada, you can plan at least half will not work.

Not so bad here in CA.

While I don't have an Energica, I do plan to buy one. Based on the battery design, I would limit DC charging to any more than you need. I would take along a smaller L2 charger than to rely so much on DC charging. DC charging is pretty stressful on batteries.

All charging is, by definition, DC charging. Because the charge rate on these bikes is completely variable, from 0-75 amps, at what rate are you claiming is high stress?

DC charging is fine for the battery as long as the rate allows for effective heat management. In this case the main issue is that I can't do a battery balance off CCS.

its a solution for bulky AC cable (type2)
you can buy plugs only on aliexpress + cut original handles smaller or make some custom 3print handles (smaller) and as cables you  can use single wires 3x 1x2,5 (maybe 4mm) wires +2x 1mm for PE/PP controlls

that type of cable will be not durable but lightweight and small
