How do zero technicians connect to the bikes?
« on: July 01, 2022, 08:50:51 AM »

Are there special intermediaries, software or hardware needed? I dont mind my local shop- but my zero loves, and i mean LOVES to break down before long weekends. Not to mention my bike is already out of warrantee, so i wouldnt mind tinkering or at least knowing how to tinker in the future

According to that the OBDII Port wiring is non-standard, but hopefully the information there can point you in the right direction.

That makes sense that it would be in the neighborhood of something typical. SO if the interface is sorted out, im curious what their software looks like. Like i know they need to change things in the bike software for little things like changing incandescent signals to LED versions. I can only surmise it would be something horribly proprietary

Oh it absolutely is. You're not getting into the bikes to change settings without the dealer level logins.

Well there are 3 devices in your Zero that you can connect to:

- Sevcon motor controller
- BMS (battery management system)
- MBB (Main bike board)

For the motor controller, there usually is no need to connect to it, nothing much you can do here. You'd need a certain CAN to USB adapter and quite special software.

For the BMS, it's really easy: there is a small plug in the front of the battery underneath two round covers. It's just a UART connexion, so you can use any UART to USB adapter.

For the MBB, that's most likely what you would want to connect to. It's also a simple UART connection, like the MBB. Just use any UART to USB adapter. The plug is an OBD2 plug, but it has nothing to do with OBD2. Only 2 pins are used for UART (and a ground).

I've accessed all three components, so if you have any more questions just ask:)
