Energica stops using bluetooth
« on: May 12, 2022, 08:14:34 PM »

I just emailed my dealer because my bluetooth won't work, and he stated that 'Energica sent out an email last week stating they'll stop using bluetooth applications'. Anybody else hear this?

They have been talking for years about an update to the connected ride options and app by adding cellular connection so that information from the bike could be pushed to the cloud directly from the bike. At that point the app can also retrieve information from the cloud and no longer needs a bluetooth connection. My guess is that is what your dealer is talking about.

So that means my bike is in limbo? No bluetooth and no cellular? Nice.

Hopefully this does not mean that current bluetooth app won't be working - or at least till they can upgrade the current used bikes to cellular.

If anything they'll probably just take the existing MyEnergica app offline or replace it with a non BLE version. They've done that in the past for iOS when the new app screenshots were leaked. Eventually it was put back in the app store. But if you want to keep on to it best to install it right now and disable automatic updates just to be sure.

I've seen screenshots of the new app and it looked very finished. I don't think the app was holding them back. More like the missing hardware on the bike. And covid probably didn't help getting that part to the market.

Nope. Your old bike will always have Bluetooth. There is no way to stop Bluetooth on a bike that already has it, unless they work on the bike to do such. Energiga doesn't get OTA updates, so you have nothing to worry about with the Bluetooth.

I wonder how much the cellular module will cost to get installed.

There sure is a way: Stop including the bluetooth module. Apparently, bluetooth is a seperate module that is located on top of the inverter and I took the covers off: no module. The box should be marked 'Hub' according to another user, and there is a connector 'Hub' under the covers but it is not connected. So they either forgot to connect it or it's not there at all.

And about functionality, I'd really like to have the nearest chargers on the dash. They sold it to me. They can't just disable functionality without telling customers I think.

Well you aren't missing much. Nothing in the app is too useful. The feature you are talking about I only got to work once, I think it needs the app open and running, plus it uses OpenChargeMap, which by itself isn't great.

I wish it gave nav directions or music playing like some other bikes but it does not. Still weird you don't have it at all.

Did the say what's replacing it?

Has anyone found anything useful from the app?

I use a GPS and Plugshare and make a directory for charging for the areas I will be in. And Plugshare often mentions when there is an issue with a charger.

I have a separate directory for DC fast and slow AC charging.

Not so much from the app itself but the BT connection has valuable battery temp and capacity values. If they no longer include the BT hub that's also lost. So hopefully an alternative will be provided by then.

These are 3 BLE values that energica does not want you to see

Nicely done, Hans.

What is the application running on the Android device, something you developed?

Is there an IOS equivalent?

There is an Android and an iOS version but there are some differences still.

iOS doesn't have BLE connection yet and map feature showing chargers or route is far from complete. So for iOS you would need an OBDII dongle to get anything visible. Benefit of using OBD instead is that you also get cell balance. BLE connection is coming, just need to make it happen.

iOS App Store link https://apps.apple.com/app/id1559468042

Android is more complete, the map is implemented showing chargers and recording route (if enabled). And you can choose either BLE connection (no other hardware needed) or OBDII connection.

Android Play Store link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=be.hcpl.android.energica

Both are open source, you can find sources on bitbucket at https://bitbucket.org/cappelleh/emapp-android and https://bitbucket.org/cappelleh/emapp-ios

Yeah, a nav repeater in the display would be really nice. I don't understand why AA and ACP aren't standard on bikes with proper screens these days.
