DSR's new battery, new problem.

I got a new 14.4 battery for my DSR in Jan and it has been great.  More range, tiny cell imbalance, much improved over the dying 13kWh pack.

As I was charging off the Delta Q I saw I was at 94% so I unplugged it since I wouldn't be riding until the next morning.
Next day I turn the key to get it to finish off the charge I see 0% battery and an empty battery graphic.
I never hear the contactor close and of course that's one of the error codes.

I'll try to take it back up to the dealer maybe Wed since it's likely the BMS or contactor which are part of the new battery pack.

We'll see how it goes.

Do a BMS reset first: on the front of the battery there is a hole with a plug, under the plug there are some lights, and two micro switches covered with dielectric grease, push those two switches together for a few seconds, and wait for the BMS to restart, if you see a green blinking light, then all should be ok.( the lights are above the switches, so it may be hard to see them without getting really low to the ground.
If the BMS reset doesn't bring it to life ( but you see the green blinking light through that hole in the front of the battery) then you can try a MBB reset, by disconnecting both plugs from the MBB , located under the seat, for like 10 minutes, and then plug them back.

Thanks for your time Tom.
I had looked under the rubber plug yesterday and saw no lights at all.  There is so much grease in there I wiped some out with a Q tip and saw what I thought was the white reset button and pressed it in for a few secs and turned the key with no difference.

The 14.4 pack is different from the 13 which had 2 visible rubber plugs and the 11.4 which just has one.

I saw your comment and went back out and laid on the floor to try to see the BMS lights and again saw nothing.
I looked at my old MY13 DS and saw no LEDs and then turned the key on and off and they lit up and showed a fully charged battery.

I thought ok let me cycle the key and see if that wakes up the BMS LEDs. 
I turn the key on and bam, bikes shows 94% charge, contactor clicks and only shows the 45 error which is kick stand down.

I will contact Zero later this week to at least document that it happened on this new battery pack.

WTH go figure.

There are two buttons. you have to push both of them at the same time, the blinking green light is there, but is hard to get the angle to see it, try looking through your phone camera, or record a video trying to get all the possible angles.

You did push one of the buttons, and each by itself will do a type of reset ( you can look it up in the Unofficial Manual ), so , maybe that's why it came back to life.

So the bike had this glitch 3 more times and second to last left me stranded at my parents place.

A BMS reset had no noticeable result or fix and for some reason in about 2-3 days it resets and works fine.
Once the contactor closes the bike works fine, no issue while riding and the battery seems fine at 2-3mV imbalance.

I dropped it off at WOW and we'll see what they can find out.

Were you able to pull the logs before dropping it off? Looking through them can sometimes give you an idea of what's going on.

Were you able to pull the logs before dropping it off? Looking through them can sometimes give you an idea of what's going on.

My real phone never would connect with the bike.  I have a $20 burner that lets me see the battery stats but won't call or email.
I think most of the error codes were 6 25 30 (35 maybe) 40 45 48 49.  Two are the kickstand down the throttle kill switch.

The dealer will send the logs to Zero.

Seeing this a lot lately, it's most likely the BMS getting stuck in hibernate. Zero has been unable to give me a cause. Usually we'll try disconnecting and reseating the BMS, and if the issue occurs, replacing the BMS is the next step.

I don't think the 2017s have a hibernate mode unless it was part of the last firmware update.  I did do the BMS reset with right button left button and both together but no quick change.

I'll post what they find.

All post 2011 Zero bike models have hibernate from their release, it is the name for putting the microprocessors in the BMS and MBB into low power mode, but not completely off, so they can keep track of time and be keyed on later. Not something anyone typically thinks about, unless you get stuck in it

Got it back today and yes Auriga you were right it was going into hibernation mode randomly.

They said when they talked to Zero that Zero knew about it and had just finish a firmware update to fix it.
So it's back and turned on the two times to get it on and off the hitch carrier. 

We'll see how it goes.
