Tesla Tap
« on: April 23, 2022, 02:13:02 AM »

Hey all,

Should be getting my Ribelle RS in the next few weeks and am looking at bolstering my options for charging. Any of you use the Tesla tap? If so, Which one?

Is there any real differences between
http://www.umc-j1772.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=17&product_id=143
and
http://www.umc-j1772.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=17&product_id=102
Besides price/size?

What other charging accessories do you carry with you and/or consider essential to keep these bikes "fueled"?

Thanks!

Nothing, unless I'm staying somewhere I leave all my cables behind. DC sites are all captive cable and AC isn't worth bothering with at a random stop when you top out at 3kW.

If I'm staying somewhere I'll just bring the cables I need, usually the granny cable is enough but if I'm camping I bring a commando to waterproof UK 3-pin adaptor to use with it. I've never actually used my type 2 cable, maybe if I stay at a hotel with a non-captive charger sometime I'll use it but I don't do much of that.

I agree with Stonewolf. Since our bikes have DCFC I don't bother with AC unless if I plan on staying at a destination charger for at least a couple hours.

I'm thinking of making/buying a 1,5m AC cable and then making the connectors way smaller for the opportunistic charging every once in a while but DC should cover most (if not all) situations.

But many areas have a lot more J-1772 than CCS. Here in Reno, NV for an example. Free J-1772's all over. Many casinos have J-1772.  It's still useful. A free 3KW charge is better than a 0KW charge.  Add a few miles as you're having lunch or whatever.

Sure but the cable is bulky so I leave it at home. AC chargers should really be captive cable anyway since almost everyone in a given region has the same connector and the vanishingly small number of people who don't can fit an adaptor in the same space they'd carry a cable in.

Speaking of cables, I heard a report the other day that the local scumbags have now focused on electric vehicle charging stations and are ripping off their charging cables and any electric power cables they can reach so that they can sell the expensive wire materials and related equipment to salvage yards. This is after the big rip off of electric street light power cables a few years ago that forced cities to bolt down their utility boxes to make it more difficult to steal the power cables between the boxes, putting the lights out of commission for months waiting for repairs and new power cables.  >:(

What cable?  This is the Energica section and no cable is needed to use J-1772 with an Energica.

AC chargers here are all cable-less, you have to bring your own. DC chargers are captive. The comment was specificly about carrying around a cable so you can use an AC charger some place just because you happened to be stopped there.

Are there no J-1772's in the UK?

So what I'm getting from y'all is that its really going to depend on the area I'm in, whether they have captive cables or not and as well as how often I will have access to CCS chargers.

Copy.

Happened to our Juicebox 50 station out front....some bum cut the whole J1772 cable off....sucks.  It made it almost 4 years out there.    We are going to have to look for an armored cable, or think about moving the charger to the back behind the fence (open hours only).

Even here in the US I've located hotels to stay at that had NEMA 14-50R outlets listed on Plugshare. My car's mobile charger came in clutch. In Europe, every station is like that.

I like that way better. 12 KW from every plug. Many, if not most, of our J-1772's are below 7KW. I like to  charge my 2017 Zero SR at 8KW during road trips.  Sometimes I must reduce by not using the OBC.  Other times I have to hog up two stations.
