Charging SR/F Premium at 6kW? (UK)
« on: April 16, 2022, 08:18:11 PM »

I recently bought a SR/F Premium. As you're all probably aware, the main feature of the Premium over the Standard is the 6kW charging. However, the dealer told me that the UK model at least is configured to charge from 2 phases - 3kW on each. The typical EVSE in the UK - the single phase ones you might have fitted at home or work - tend to do 7kW on a single phase. This means that only one of my 3KW chargers in in use and it does indeed charge a bit under 3kW. I've got a few questions:

Do variants for other countries have both internal chargers connected to the same phase? If so, would it be feasible to rewire the UK model to be the same?

Is there any EVSE then will deliver power to two or more phases from a single phase supply? I've heard that v1 of the Tesla Mobile Connector will do so if connecter to a 32A commando socket. We're about to fit an EVSE for my wife's incoming Tesla model 3 so it could be a good time to pick the right one.

Would a modified Type 2 to to Type 2 cable that connects the phases together be a really bad idea?

These are more just casual thoughts at the moment because to be honest charging at 3kW has not really been a problem. It just seems daft to lug around an extra 3kW charger I can't use. I assume it will charge at 6kW from a public level 3 station but I'm unlikely to ever need this.

Someone has modified a cable on the forum:

I had an email discussion about this issue with Zero's European technical support. Wiring the chargers like this makes no sense for the uk.  I work for a company that makes charge points and we've dealt with very confused custoners who've had the same issue with VW vans.  I think for Europe you can't usually draw more than 16A on a single phase.

Thanks for the link to that thread. I thought I'd searched before posting, but obviously didn't do a great job!

You definitely can in the UK. The most common home EVSE chargers supply 7kW (about 28A) from a single phase. Circuits for a electric oven are usually 32A too.
