Might be the end of my 2013
« on: November 16, 2021, 05:22:29 AM »

So a few weeks ago while heading to a friends house I passed by the spot where I first noticed my DC-DC converter have it's first death flash from years ago.  As I got near his house I glanced down and saw the analog reboot of the dash.  The tell tale sign of the beginning of the end for one.  I also didn't recharge while at his house so on the way back (about the 40 mile point) I noticed the bike was sluggish going up hill.  It was cooler and I was down on charge so I didn't pay it much mind.  I see the reboot a couple more times in the next few rides, so I know to limit it to day rides only.

Yesterday I do a simple 32 mile route after charging up to the full 11 bars and the Delta Q charger red lighted and turned off.  I come back in and my dash shows 5 bars left when it should have shown 7 but I figure I had been zipping around in the cooler air and burned more than I thought.  I plug in the Delta Q and get the old burner phone that has the old app on it and I pull it up to check the battery.

To my surprise it says I only have 25% SOC.  Now this little phone doesn't have a screen big enough to really see anything but the top most edge of the Volt reading.  I see it's showing 3 digits but can't really make them out.  The BMS window shows like 25% SOC.
The cell imbalance was 45mV but came down to 3mV by the time it shut off.  The app read 100% SOC and the BMS window has all 4 LEDs showing.

The charge time was about 4 hours to a shown 100% which is about what charging after that 32 mile route takes.  So I figure a glitch and take it out today.  Same basic route with a spin around a small lake taking it to 36 miles.  I get home with 6 bars showing.  I left the bike on and looked at the BMS window and it only showed the one green light again.  I had heard a clicking sound and turned the bike off and jacked up  the rear wheel to see if the brake rotor was warped and hitting the pads.  I turned the bike back on and now the dash shows only 2 blinking bars.

This time I plug in both the Delta Q and the half working onboard charger.  The app shows 21% SOC but still a 3 digit volt reading of something.
I haven't tried a BMS reset yet but don't know it that can help at this point.  Where do you measure the pack voltage?  Off the motor controller input bolt studs?

It's so close to my original mileage goal of 50k but I can't justify a new battery.

Open to any ideas.

It sounds to me like your Zero is telling you that it is time to buy a new Damon electric motorcycle model.   ;)

now ya got jokes?  LOL

So now it's showing 96% and all 4 LEDs showing again.  I wonder if the DC-DC flashing cleared the firmware?
The bike was doing 60 mile rides with 40% remaining over the summer.  Just hit all at once.

Yeah Damon is taking their scam all the way, by getting a big new factory just to take $100 from idiots like me I guess.   ::)

Anyway.

I'd like some real ideas on this old bike.

I'd like some real ideas on this old bike.

This is a concern I have to all low volume EVs (and lots of other types of electronic products).   Keeping them running long term seems like it could be tough.   No long term factory support as they move on to the next better technology.    Not a ton of aftermarket support as volumes were too low to justify it.  Service manual - no way.

When I bought my first Zero earlier this year I sold a 2009 Kawasaki Versys.   There is no problems keeping a 10+ year old ICE bike on the road and running.   Tons of factory support parts.   Plenty of aftermarket support.   Service manual with wiring diagram - no problem.

Good luck in your quest.

PS:  I would never sink $15k- $25k into a brand new, low volume product like Damon unless I didn't mind having an expensive toy sitting in a garage to look at.   That is way more risky proposition than even an older Zero.

I hear your caution with Damon and I do have a list of boxes that will need to be checked off before I buy the bike.
I'll need a test ride for sure plus a confirmed GA service center.  I'm hoping they increase the warranty as well.  We'll see.

That would be the sort of things that i would be looking for also in connection with any new electric vehicle brand that is not yet established in the market.

That and the fact that all they make is a single seat sportbike that looks totally short on comfort has less than ZERO appeal to me.
