Heated grips retrofit on standard SR/F
« on: November 13, 2021, 02:51:32 AM »

I know Zero advertises the heated grips as an accessory for purchase. Has anyone done the upgrade themselves? Does it require any kind of coding to activate the feature?

I'm sure I've read that you need to enable the grips in the bike's firmware and someone showed what was needed. Rather unhelpfully, I can't remember where I read that and can't find it now. Maybe someone else knows. Officially I suppose it's a trip to the dealer to do this.

Installed the grips today and I can confirm they do not function, I will need to run to the dealer to get them activated.

Since I couldn't find any documentation around installing them, here's some tips and thoughts for anyone else doing the install.

  • You will need to remove the tank assembly, headlight, and cluster. No way around it. It also helps to loosen the black lower panel on the front of the bike, just 4 screws holding it in place. You don't have to remove it, but loosening it helps with wire routing.
  • The connection for the throttle is a gray 8 pin plug behind the cluster, on the right side. Took me a while to puzzle out where this was located, but holding the new grip in place and seeing how long the cable is helped.
  • The 2 pin connections for the grip heaters are directly in front of the storage compartment and visible from the right side of the bike. They each have a small blank plug to remove before you can connect the grips. Picture of these below
  • DO NOT fully remove the two screws holding the throttle on. Luckily I read this tip before starting. If you fully remove them, the throttle will come apart and the spring will go flying and it's a pain to reassemble. Just loosen them enough to slip the old one off and the new one on.
  • The non heated left grip is just held on with friction, a lot of prying/pulling and it pulls off without too much trouble. The heated one slips on easily and is held in place with 2 screws under rubber caps

There is a setting labeled accesory_configuration in the MBB console that requires a change when heated grips are added.  The correct value is 0x12 for just heated grips and 0x32 for heated grips with LED turn signals.

Is that something I can do myself? I’ve used similar tools for cars in the past.

A search on the forums will reveal several threads describing the process.

I found the instructions to make the cable and how to set the configuration, but only found two references here to people trying and both reported they couldn't do it without a password. Were you able to update your configuration without a password?

This is correct, with the latest cypher iii firmware you need a special key to enable any of the config features that only Zero can provide. The keys are different per bike, making sharing them pointless.

I believe you can still set accessory_config, but that requires logging in and only dealers seem to have that ability right now.

Made the cable today, was able to connect to the bike and view all the configs and stats and such, but can confirm the accessory config is not available while not logged in. Oh well, still wanted to set it up to play around with.

It does look like the config in firmware v20 now shows all the paid unlocks and their status

I didn't know CCS was a Zero option.

It currently isn't but that suggests it may be sometime soon!

BTW, things have turned kind of cold lately in my area. Both of my BMWs have heated grips, but I find that battery-operated heated gloves keep my hands warmer than do the heated grips as they keep my entire hands warm instead of just the palms. You can get heated gloves designed for motorcycle riding that are nice but pretty darn expensive. If you want to go cheap just to try them out, they are also sold for skiers and hikers, but typically made out of waterproof fabric instead of leather.
