I wonder what is going on in Surrey BC Canada?
« on: October 09, 2021, 06:14:27 AM »

I was searching the local news stories for Surrey BC Canada, as I so often do, and I came across one of those "City Council" new jobs created type pieces.  It seems they are opening the EV Centre of Excellence to manufacture and R&D electric vehicles.

It will be a very nice building with a shield with a dragon on it as a logo and then next to it is a D  A  M  O  N sign.
Of course that could be anything.  Right?

So from the city of Surrey's website:

How close to the location they work out of now is this?  I went to Damon.com and can't find an address.

 8)  Not sure what to make of this emojo.  Have you have read about the micro factories they will build in areas of high intrest?

Have they made it to a track lately?  Still going to play MotoE?

Damon is currently based out of Vancouver which is 30ish miles away from Surrey BC.

Fan K I guess there is an age or cultural difference between us.  Basically I think Damon will make some pretty awesome bikes.  There are others here who have varying degrees of skepticism to flat out thinking they will never make bikes.  When I see that the company is moving towards making awesome bikes I post it to reinforce my view and chip away at the other view.
I think/hope the other members see this as the good natured jab that I intend for it to be, while being excited that the Electric Motorcycle industry is improving.
That is why I posted the cool emoji, because the scale of being right is tipping more in my favor and to have a little fun.
I hope that explains most of my posts for you so you can apply the same principle to future posts.

As for the track, they have a blog that talks about doing track days IOW track day advice.  I feel they fully intend to race MotoE at some point.  I don't know when Energica's agreement to be the exclusive manufacturer for MotoE runs out.  I think it's the next year or two.

I think it's the next year or two.

I thought it just got renewed rather recently.

What's with the clutch lever in the picture?

Rear brakes perhaps?

Yeah I suggested it be an adjustable regen lever but they seem pretty intent on making it a rear brake lever.  They said they are still testing it but some motorcycle racers are going that route.
I guess they are using those quick clutch-less shifting transmissions on the (gas) race bikes.

Adjustable regen is pretty much a rear brake!

All race bikes I know of still have clutch levers on the left side, more and more riders are adding a rear brake lever on the left that is thumb operated. When cornering the inside foot is positioned with the toe on the peg, this prevents the application of a foot activated rear brake lever when turning right. No real benefit for street use...

Well, there's the benefit of being able to use fine motor controls instead to operate the rear brake.

While they have mentioned both better control and foot "freedom", I guess.  I think it's Damon's "Shift" function where the handle bars, foot pegs, and (maybe) wind screen move that got the rear brake lever on the left handle.

Having the brake pedal move to stay lined up with the foot peg would likely have to jump through a lot of testing hurdles in different countries.

Demoni, thanks, a little thumb lever explains how they get both functions on the left side.

Having used left rear brake levers for quite a few years I'd say that it's basically a mistake to not use that lever for braking when you've got the chance. Left hand rear brakes are so much better to use than foot brakes.

This was just posted on one of the BMW forums that I frequent:

This just hit the news a few weeks ago, seems these guys are hard at it but like so many things these days, it takes three times longer to get anywhere, and there headline model with all the high tech features seems to be steadily increasing in cost,,,, like so many things,,.

Vancouver electric safety system and motorcycle maker Damon Motors will move in to a new manufacturing facility in Surrey in 2022.

The company, founded in 2017 by Jay Giraud and Dom Kwong, started by developing safety systems for motorcycles that use sensors and cameras to identify risk in blind spots and for frontal collision.

Over the next two years an electric motorcycle was developed with a powertrain comprising frame, battery pack and electric motor (incorporating the safety technology). This was called the HyperSport.

The company announced in March this year it had received $30 million in startup funding and had orders for $20 million worth of motorcycles, which sell for between $20,000 and $45,000. Recently, the company announced it had $40 million worth of orders and that it was sold out for 2022.

HyperSport motorcycles are currently being built in a Vancouver facility on Powell Street, but as of October 2022 will be made in a 110,000 square-foot facility near the Pattullo Bridge and Scott Road SkyTrain station being developed by Bosa Properties. Bosa will lease the space to Damon Motors.

I had asked them when they might be using the factory and one of the VPs replied that it would be 2022.

As for price, anything could happen as inflation expands, but they don't have those prices on their website unless maybe that's the CAD price.

US prices are $17K $20k $25k and $40k.

For those interested.  Here is a video from Damon talking about the factory.
