I always assumed the tank lid was an integral part of the tank plastic assembly but it turns out it's just glued on, the rest of the assembly is the same as when the bikes used to have the removable bag and there aren't even any screws securing it. After only about 2 years and 3k miles my lid had come almost completely detached, to the extent that I could easily pull it off the rest of the way with nothing needed to pry it away. I only noticed when my key got stuck as I tried to pull it out and it lifted the entire thing up.

I've since glued it back in after cleaning off the junk that was previously holding it, I only had some gasket maker to hand but to be honest it's probably just as strong as what was there before. If you're someone that puts valuables in the tank compartment I would suggest driving some screws through both parts from the inside.

It's supposed to be bonded like with solvent but... sometimes that doesn't take.  Weird!  I guess a new thing to check.

It definitely wasn't solvent but rather a rubbery black material, it peeled cleanly off the tank compartment and wasn't too hard to scrape off the lid surround.

Was it tacky? Could be butyl.

Nah it was completely dry, consistency was about the same as silicone sealant you'd use around the edge of your bathtub and similar to the gasket maker that I used instead. The lid surround isn't a tight fit in the bucket so whatever you used would need to take up that extra space, something thin like superglue probably wouldn't work.

Interesting.  A good solution might be epoxy as the stuff bonds like iron and is viscous enough that it would fill in gaps like the sealant you used?  This never happened to me because a year after I bought my 2018 S, I added the Charge Tank so I no longer have the storage compartment or the lid.
