Zero DS charging issue
« on: July 27, 2021, 01:28:32 PM »

Hi all, it's Andrii from SilentEnduro

Currently we got Zero DS for service with charging issue.
Actually it was not able to turn on a bike, but with help of FB and Reddit groups, I've managed to connect to BMS and read logs/errors.

So, as I can see from logs - bike simply doesn't see a charger:

Could you please help me to find solution for this?

Have you tried an external charger with the bike's key on? Such as a DeltaQ?  If so, what then happens?

Unfortunately I don't have any kind of Zero chargers available here.
Should it be only Zero-authorized charger or might be any with appropriate voltage?
And will it be enough just to connect + and - to charging port to start charge? (with the bike's key on)

I'm asking since there is some communication wires from on-board charger to bike, and I don't know what is it for))

The charger still has to be compatible for other reasons (I use Elcons}, but the key on will close the contactor when the OBC isn't being used or when your OBC won't close the contactor because of a defect.

So yeah, if you have a compatible charger, all you need to connect to is the "+" & "-"  terminals. not real need for the communication with the bike.

The way my Elcons work is they will only charge up to 95% SOC and then the OBC takes over.. If it did have the communication,  then my Elcon chargers could be programed to go to the full 100% SOC. To me, that is not a big deal as it will slow down a lot near the full end of charge anyway.

BTW, have you tried to charge with the key on?  If not, try that now.  It could be just that your OBC isn't closong the contactor.

Update here:
Tried to charge with key on - no results
Checked wires from charger - ok
Measured voltage on OBC output - not ok, ~20-3v

Now I'm looking for 116v charger to test a charge.
And actually there is a small spark while I'm connecting charging cable to a bike, but I guess it's normal.

I an not sure about the Zero OBC, but I can tell you that many chargers put out no voltage until the see voltage coming back from the battery. So that makes them difficult to check when not connected.

I know for sure that is how my Elcons work. No output until it sees so much voltage from the battery. I assume other EV chargers also work this way.

So what you check for is a voltage raise at the battery  when the charger is connected.  Or better yet, a way to check the charge current.

BTW, these days, even the better 12 Volt car chargers put out no voltage until it sees the battery. It's the norm, these days.

Yeah this would depend a lot on how you probe it. You should be able to see the charger output voltage by measuring the voltage on the quick charge port or by decoding the logs.
For the bike to see the charger, it needs to get the 5V signal on the charge enable pins from the charger. If ti does, the green charge light will flash regardless of the voltage. After a few seconds with no or low  voltage, the charge light will remain off.

This sounds like a classic faulty charger

We all only tend to hear about the units that fail, but there sure is a high failure rate for the on-board charger on S/DS. Glad you got it sorted out!
