Didn't receive charger with new Ribelle
« on: July 08, 2021, 08:01:53 AM »

Hey all,

I picked up my 2022 Ribelle last week and they had not received the charger yet. The dealer is loaning me a 110V charger while they wait for it to come in. Has anyone else had these issues, and how long did it take to actually receive the charger? It really seems like a massive oversight to ship an ELECTRIC motorcycle without a means of charging it.

This is typical (today) for any OEM to encounter supply chain delays for COTS item(s) - cannot fault Energica necessarily on this one, but yeah, sucks to be you...sorry.

I don't think the Ribelles, Ego+, and SS9+ come with an EVSE anymore. The RS models do.

That doesn't sound right. What does an owner do without a way of charging at home? Or is it considered an optional extra?

(Here's what EVSE stands for. Some of us newbies have to look these FLAs up!)

Well you buy a charger yourself?
Or maybe you already have one if you have an electric car (I do)?

Pretty sure you can buy a relatively cheap charger for the bike that's at least as good quality as the one they have usually supplied?

Pretty sure MVetter is right about the RS thing... As far as I remember they write you get a charger, indoor cover + something when you opt for RS.

Here's a better video:

The charger itself is on your bike, under the seat. The hardware to which you're referring is a glorified extension cable. I never used mine so I gave it away. To be fair I already had a 32 amp one that plugged into a 14-50, but I almost never charge at home.

Since my car EV is a Tesla, I had to get a separate EVSE for my Energica, and it was only $200 for a 16A one on Amazon.

Could have spent the $200 on a Tesla adapter and used it at Destination stations as well as home!

I don't think the Ribelles, Ego+, and SS9+ come with an EVSE anymore. The RS models do.

It just seems odd to me that they would not come with the cable (EVSE I guess) that you need to charge the bike. I see on https://configurator.energicamotor.com/us/configure/evaribelle_my2021/version that the RS package comes with a charging cable: "The Eva Ribelle RS is equipped with a Storage Kit: charging cable, rear stand and stretch indoor cover." But the dealer kept asking me what kind of charging cable I needed so I figured it would come with the cable. It's a $200 part that I would have bought from Amazon before I had the bike if I had known it wasn't included in the purchase.

I stand by my original statement though - it seems pretty cruddy to ship an EV without a charging cable/EVSE/whatever. This is my first electric vehicle so I figured it would come with the cable. I guess they're assuming that (much like Apple) you probably have a charging cable already so they're saving money by not including it.

You know, I didn't even think that it wouldn't come with an EVSE but  yeah, the RS info makes a point to say it's included while the base model makes no mention of it.  I think I responded to you on reddit, but when Energica USA informed me that my bike arrived at California, they asked me whether I preferred a 120v or 240v charging kit. Since I already have a Tesla wall connector and a Tesla Tap, I just opted for the 120v so I had another charging option with regular US power outlets if I ever needed it.

I'm not sure if Energica sent me the EVSE as a consolation for a color configuration snafu or if it's standard procedure, but it definitely didn't come from my dealer. In fact, all things considered, the only thing the dealer added to the transaction was taking care of registration, NYS safety inspection, and delivering the bike to my residence from their shop. I'm not complaining, but it just seems like unnecessary paperwork - I had to deal with Energica and the dealer every time I reached out with a concern or question. I know this is inherent with the whole manufacturer/dealership model, but it's rather inefficient.

Tesla is also now being cheap with the charge stuff.

My 2018 M3 came with all types of cables and adapters.

A buddy of mine just bought a new Model Y. It only came with a 120 VAC charge stuff, so it took him three days to charge up before purchasing the other stuff so he can charge on 240 VAC.

And I thought they were being cheap because my 60K$ Tesla came with no spare tire.

Yeah they went cheap right after your model year - my '19 M3 came only with the 120v stuff as well. Again, I didn't really care too much as I had the Tesla Wall Connector anyway, so it's basically an emergency charging option when I'm on the road somewhere and only have access to a standard outlet. Still, it seems to be the responsible thing to include a charging mechanism that connects to your available power outlet at home to charge your EV bike, car, or otherwise. Until houses come standard with an EVSE solution, I hope this trend doesn't continue.

I have a reservation for the upcoming F-150 Lightning, and it comes with an 80A EVSE! No clue on how much the vehicle-to-load equipment installation will cost, though.

I guess the dealer is ordering the cable or something then. They were definitely adamant about finding out which type of 220V plug I'd have, so I'm confident they'll get me something. I start working in a new place next week but probably won't start commuting on the bike until August, so if they don't have something by then I'll just get one from Amazon. The 110V they loaned me only charges at 5A, so it takes a while. Yesterday I rode about 90 miles, got down to maybe 30%, and it took about 15 hours to fully charge on 110. If I work until 1800 or 1830 and don't get home and plug in until 1900 then I don't know if it will get enough juice by 0530 the next morning when I leave for work.
